Roof Collapse Due to Snow Loads? There’s an Expert for That 

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute professor of civil and environmental engineering Michael O’Rourke wrote the book that is critical for preventing roofs from caving in under the weight of snow. Snow Loads was published by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2010. He has been chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers Snow and Rain Load committee since 1997, charged with developing snow load provisions for the nation’s building codes, and a member since 1978.

Let there be light: Helping people through dark days
Excessive sun exposure is bad for our health. But sun deprivation is also harmful - contributing to ailments from depression to disturbed sleep, obesity and even cancer.

The Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York is developing a system that could transform people's homes and lives by regulating the amount of light to which they are exposed.
EMPAC Studio 1 to Host Premiere of Project by Fell, Fullerton Whitman
The US premiere of a new duo project from two of the most restless innovators in electronic music. Mark Fell and Keith Fullerton Whitman are each known for their fluid approaches to electronic music making. Born of the techno generation, both have infused, deconstructed, and transcended their early mastery of vernacular dance styles with a more academic ear toward the legacy and promise of computer music. Exploring the technical, conceptual, and aesthetic notions of music synthesis, the duo is extending their shared approach to the project after an inaugural run of European performances in fall 2014.
Experts Mentor Their Business Peers During Empowerment Roundtable
Business leaders from throughout the region advised one another during the second ever Empowerment Roundtables event hosted by the Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce Thursday, February 12th.

Topics of discussion focused on the challenges of the business world, such as having difficult conversations, taking risks and balancing multiple roles in life. Attendees from all different industries were encouraged to interact with one another, and many found that their troubles were similar across the board.

Making a Difference in a Global Community: Engineers Without Borders and the Trip to Panama

While most of the campus was dealing with frigid temperatures during the winter break, eight members of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute student chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA traveled to the remote Panamanian island of Isla Popa II to construct a centralized rainwater catchment and treatment system for the island’s native Ngäbe people. Without access to a reliable source of potable drinking water, most community members on the island drink and cook with harvested rainwater contaminated with coliform bacteria.
