One robot may have done just that.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Joins 252 Groups and Business leaders Across the Country In Call to Action for American “Innovation Imperative”

On June 23, ten CEOs and 252 organizations signed “Innovation: An American Imperative,” a document aimed at federal decision makers and legislators. It underscores the findings—and warnings—contained in The American Academy of Arts & Sciences report, Restoring the Foundation: The Vital Role of Research in Preserving the American Dream

According to Restoring the Foundation, “There is a deficit between what America is investing and what it should be investing to remain competitive, not only in research but in innovation and job creation.” The United States is failing to keep pace with competitor nations with regard to investments in basic research and development. America’s ascendency in the 20th century was due in large part—if not primarily—to its investments in science and engineering research.  Basic research is behind every new product brought to market, every new medical device or drug, every new defense and space technology and many innovative business practices.

Internet of Things Turning New York's Lake George Into “World’s Smartest Lake”

The Jefferson Project at Lake George, one of the most ambitious research projects to deploy Big Data and analytics technology to manage and protect a body of fresh water, is entering a new phase in which enormous amounts of data will be captured from sensors and analyzed. Scientists anticipate that insights uncovered from the data collection and discovery stage of the project will not only help manage and protect one of America’s most famous lakes, it will also create a blueprint to preserve important lakes, rivers, and other bodies of fresh water around the globe.

A collaboration between IBM Research (NYSE: IBM), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and The FUND for Lake George, the Jefferson Project involves more than 60 scientists from around the world including IBM Research labs in Brazil, Ireland, Texas, and New York. The project is deploying Internet of Things technology on a grand scale in conjunction with research and experimentation to understand the ecology of large lakes and the impact of human activity.
