Hi <<First Name>>,

It's been a busy month for the world of wrist wearables! From their role in collecting data to the latest smartwatch innovations from Motorola and Apple, smartwatches are trending. This edition of our newsletter will get you up to speed on everything you need to know!

The Apple Watch Has Arrived!

Just last week at their annual event, Apple revealed the anticipated Apple Watch! The Apple Watch features a refined rectangular design, a Digital Crown dial to navigate through the screen, wireless magnetic charging, customizable watch faces, and the new Apple Pay system that will allow you to make purchases directly from your watch. The Apple Watch promises to integrate seamlessly with iOS 8 devices, while delivering all the usual notifications right to your wrist - including Facebook updates and text messages!

Of course, what would a smartwatch be without functioning as an activity tracker - the Apple Watch doubles as an all-day fitness monitor that tracks your activities, as well as your body movements and heart rate. The watch includes other apps iOS natives are familiar with such as Apple Maps, Siri, Mail, Photos, and even a Camera shutter synced to your iPhone.

It is scheduled for release in early 2015, with an estimated price at $349. Find more info on here!

Wearable Data

On August 24, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake woke up the city of Napa and its surrounding area in Calfornia - that is, according to Jawbone. In an interesting use of data, Jawbone explored the effect of the earthquake on its Jawbone UP wearers in the Bay Area who use it to track their sleep patterns. Their research found that 93% of wearers in cities within 15 miles of the quake's epicenter woke up suddenly when the earthquake struck, with a progressively diminishing effect the further away Jawbone wearers lived from the epicenter. Although this is only a modest example of using connected technology to collect mass information, we're excited to see how data from wearables technology will be extracted for future studies!
