ALDA Conference Closing Keynote Announced
A Conversation with Michael Lewis: A Pandemic Story

Presented by:
  • Michael Lewis, best-selling author of modern classics including “Moneyball”, “The Blind Side”, “The Big Short”, “Liar’s Poker” and the upcoming “The Premonition: A Pandemic Story” coming out May 4. (Conference attendees will receive a copy of the book prior to the session.)
A summary of Lewis’ forthcoming best-seller:

“The news out of China was not good: there were signs that a new disease might be big—scary big, like a brushfire coming at you uphill. Authorities, medical and political, saw no reason to worry and little need for tests. Michael Lewis’s riveting nonfiction thriller pits a rogue band of visionaries, working under the radar, against the weight and disinterest of officialdom. It is a race against time, and the deadline is now … or yesterday.”

Join us on May 27 at 11 am Eastern, read your complimentary copy of the book, and ask questions of this dynamic author at the ALDA Senior Executive Conference.

Industry Assessment: ALDA’s Market Up 7.6% YOY in Q4 2020
Life Science Sector up 19.8%, Europe up 10.3%
ALDA’s latest Industry Market Assessment report is now available, focused on Q4 2020. The main narrative at a macro level continues to be tied to the impact that COVID-19 has had on these segments and regions. However, unlike the previous three quarters, Q4 showed significant growth not just over the period tied to the pandemic, but also YOY to Q4 2019. Multiple categories saw positive growth for the first time since Q4 2019.

The Industry Market Assessment report, prepared quarterly by Strategic Directions International (“SDi”) for members of ALDA, is based on public reports and SDi’s proprietary research. The ALDA market, composed of the 15 technology markets most important to ALDA’s membership, is estimated to be 75-80% of total global industry revenues.

The report reflects that total revenues grew 7.6% year-over-year in Q4 2020. Life sciences (LS), which saw growth even during Q2 and Q3 2020
—due to reagents and sample prep—achieved 19.8% growth.

The chromatography, mass spectrometry & automation (CMSA) market and analytical chemicals each grew for the first time since Q4 2019, 4% and 6.3%, respectively. Spectroscopy and materials analysis (SMA) market saw a decline but its least significant decline in over a year at 2.3%.
Geographically, all non-ROW regions increased in the quarter, with Europe leading the way at 10.3%. Asia Pacific and North America were also strong performers in the quarter, while Japan advanced modestly. The ROW segment continues to perform poorly, and instrumentation demand declined 8.3%, as changing government priorities and poor economies sapped potential sources of demand.

ALDA Shares D&I Benchmark Survey Results
Thank you to the ALDA member companies who participated in our first annual Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarking Survey. This survey—the first of its kind in our industry— received responses from 45 member companies and includes representation data on ~265,000 employees. We are truly excited to be able to provide this actionable data set through ALDA.
On February 22, ALDA hosted a webinar for participants with our partners at Pearl Meyer. If you participated in the survey and missed this webinar, it is recorded and available on-demand, so please reach out and we will send you the link.
For non-participants, we are also building out a higher-level executive summary with a corresponding narrative to share with the industry. We expect that to be completed in the coming weeks and will share it when it is ready.
There is much more to come, and the ALDA DEI Task Force as well as the Board of Directors will be sharing more information about specific steps we’ll be taking in the near future.
