Reflecting and Looking Forward
As we approach the conclusion of a year that has been unlike any other in our lifetimes, ALDA would like to thank you for your continued support and membership in our organization. 2020 was undoubtedly a challenging year, but along with our resilient member community we were able to pivot and provide a venue for collaboration, information sharing, learning, and networking—the very core of our mission.
Thank you for your participation and engagement; we are stronger together, and 2020 was an opportunity to show that strength. We step into 2021 excited for the potential of our association and industry and look forward as we continue to bring value to you, our members, and building on our successes.
Looking back on the past year, ALDA’s new virtual presence enabled it to reach more members more frequently than ever before. Here are just a handful of the highlights:
ALDA Collaboratives: We hosted over 30 sessions—over 30 hours— dedicated to our members’ operations and HR teams, providing a venue where our industry could collaborate and share tools and resources to navigate these unprecedented times and get back to work. Over 130 individuals from over 60 companies participated in at least one session
We hosted Senior Executive Virtual Sessions including:
  • Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb & McKinsey presenting “Perspectives on the COVID-19 crisis“
  • Merrill Lynch & Linus Group presenting “Looking Ahead: Global Economic Outlook and Strategically Navigating Customers’ Expectations”
  • CARES Act Overview with King & Spalding
  • Senior Executive Roundtable on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
  • The U.S. Election: Navigating Policy Implications for ALDA Members with Innovation Policy Solutions
Functional Executive Meetings including:
  • Service & Support Executive Conference on leveraging AI & AR and the digital journey for field service teams & customers.
  • Marketing & Sales Executives Conference
Our Fall Senior Management Conference, “Artificial Intelligence and its Implications for ALDA Members” featuring:
  • Former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson
  • MIT Sloan Research Scientist Andrew McAfee, D.B.A.
  • Broad Institute’s Anne Carpenter
  • Quantum Black Chief Scientist Jacomo Corbo
  • Tempus’ Martin Stumpe, Ph.D.
Board-hosted Networking: 4+ virtual events including whiskey tastings, sessions on IPOs and value-based leadership as well as 4+ in-person including a clambake in Boston, hiking & dinner in the Bay Area, and a golf outing in San Diego.
 This is in addition to:
  • Our COVID-19 webpage, communications and online exchanges.
  • DEI Statement & DEI Task Force leading to the current D&I Benchmarking Study (more info below).
  • Market Data: Quarterly reporting in partnership with SDI as well as category-specific reports.
Thank you for support of these initiatives; we look forward to building on these in 2021.
Spring Conference is Going Virtual
The ALDA Board of Directors recently made the tough decision to move our Spring Senior Executive Conference online. This May, we will meet virtually. We are currently planning on being in person next October in California, but for now, we’re hard at work lining up a great program for May. The focus and theme are fittingly “Pandemics and Infectious Disease”; we’ll be sharing a lot more on specific speakers and dates as we move into January so we can get that on your calendars.
The format will be somewhat similar to the fall, with the conference taking place over the course of a few weeks. We will be working to incorporate more networking opportunities into the event, but we’re really excited about what we have so far, and we will absolutely deliver a valuable conference to ALDA members. Much more to come on this in the near future.
Happy Holidays!

We hope you all have a safe, happy & healthy holiday season. We look forward to reconnecting in 2021. Take care, and talk to you in the New Year.

D&I Benchmarking Survey Closes this Friday, December 18
A final reminder that the deadline for data submission for our first annual Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarking Survey is this Friday, December 18. As noted by ALDA Chair Brad Gray in his recent email, responses so far have been very promising. The final report will include over 25 companies in our space representing over 250,000 employees and well over 60% of industry revenues.
As a reminder, only companies who participate in the survey will receive access to the data in this report. The survey covers:
  • Diversity in the workplace. The final report will breakdown employee gender and race/ethnicity by job band (entry level through C-Suite and Board). Results will be sorted by geography and company size.
  • Diversity and inclusion practices. The rest of the survey will address key questions including: What diversity practices have organizations instituted? How do they look at diversity when it comes to hiring, internal education, and other initiatives? How are they looking at pay gap and pay equity? And how are they communicating about these programs?
A few key reminders about the survey:
  • Only participating companies will receive this data and report.
  • Only ALDA members can participate.
  • The survey closes December 18.
  • Results and report will be delivered in Q1.
This is a real, tangible, and valuable member benefit that the ALDA Board of Directors and DEI Task Force are very excited to bring to our membership and our industry on an annual basis. We hope you’ll participate.
