                                     Security. Purpose. Legacy

                                                February 1, 2021
Hello Everyone,

As we emerge from the darkest depths of winter, we look forward to brighter days, in more ways than one. This month's newsletter will talk about the "Good Night's Sleep" portion of our Successful Investing Solution. We provide an explanation on why we call this portion of the portfolio "Good Night's Sleep", followed by an article that will review what Fixed Income is.

The Healthy Aging Strategies section presents an interesting article on sugar and its effects on our brain. I want to wish a Happy Chinese New Year to all on February 12, as we welcome in the year of the ox.

Keep Well,
Chad

Evidence Based Investing – globally diversified, balanced portfolio structured to reduce expenses, turnover, and minimize tax, but should grow with the market. We partner with Dimensional Fund Advisors for this component.

Rising Income Investments – blue chip securities that provide a robust, consistently rising dividend to counteract inflation. Potential candidates are Canadian financials, telecoms and utilities.

Good Night’s Sleep – fixed income holdings which are uncorrelated to equities and have low volatility to provide portfolio stability. This component can provide a steady, dependable income during prolonged bear markets.

Relative Strength – a tactical asset allocation portfolio which uses a rules-based approach to objectively assess opportunities and threats in the market. We partner with Bank of Montreal’s Global Asset Management for this component.
Our "Good Night's Sleep" strategy is quite simple. We allocate a portion of the portfolio, with enough capital to fund your income needs for the next 4-7 years, to Fixed Income assets. This Good Night's Sleep portion of the portfolio is where you would draw income from during prolonged periods of falling prices in the equity markets (a.k.a. Bear Markets). So you would not have to draw down your equity holdings in the portfolio when equity prices are down.

eg., if you need $70,000/yr of income, then the Good Night's Sleep portion would be 4 X $70,000 = $280,000 worth in fixed income.

Why 4-7 years' worth of income for the Good Night's Sleep portion of your portfolio?
It is because the greatest Bear Markets of this millenium (2000 & 2008) took about 4+ years for the markets to get back to pre-crash levels. Although the average Bear Market takes on average about 17 months to recover, having a 4+ year income cushion in Fixed Income will provide a source of income that will not draw down your equity holdings during extreme market volatility. Therefore, you would not have to sell any equity at depressed price levels, even during great Bear Markets.

HEALTHLY AGING STRATEGIES
sweets can impair memory

Do you have a sweet tooth? Many of us do, but beware of the scientific findings which suggest that sugar can be addictive and can cause problems in our brain that impair memory. Click here to read the Zoomer article which details these findings.
