5 Ways to Deal With Criticism

  1. Don’t take criticism personally.  People can have their opinions. You have yours and they have theirs.
  2. Ask yourself: What can I learn from criticism? Often there is a nugget of truth and it is an opportunity for us to grow.
  3. Remember some people look at life negatively. Don’t succumb to their negativity.
  4. Remember that unhappy people look for more fault than happy people. Why should you let their unhappiness affect your happiness?
  5. Learn from their words not from their tone. Separate out their tone and style of criticism from the message.

Snack Round Up from my Dietitian Nutritionist Friends – February is National Snack Month

I have never met ONE person in my 30-plus years of being a RD that did not love to snack. And, the right snacks are really good for us. A recent study showed snacks control your appetite and your weight. Who doesn’t love that. Check out some snack ideas from my dietitian friends

Empathy: The Secret to Being Understood

I had an ingrown hair on the back of my neck that turned into a cyst that needed to be removed by a plastic surgeon. To prepare for this outpatient surgery I had to take my shirt off. I told the plastic surgeon, "I am freezing in here."  His reply was, “I like it that way.” I wanted to scream, “Why don’t you care about me?”
I had been having this strange toe pain. The podiatrist thought I may have a Morton’s neuroma which sounded like there were minimal treatment options and cortisone shots. I exclaimed, “This sucks!”  The podiatrist stated, “I have had mine for ten years.”  I wanted to scream, “I don’t care about your toes! Why don’t you just care about me?”
What was missing in each interaction? Empathy!

Where is Chere?

February 10 and 11, 2016 I attended the Midwest Dairy Ambassador Workshop Training in Chicago. We were enlightened on the emerging science of whole and reduced fat dairy, GMOs, effective communications, and what consumers think about foods and dairy.

Stephanie Cundith MS RDN is the Communications Manager for Midwest Dairy and is an exemplary example of integrity, dependability and charisma. She knows a lot and treats people right. What a legacy for her darling son Topher!

Where is Chere savoring life?

Savoring is a quality that happy people naturally have in abundance.

Savoring = to mindfully engage in thoughts or behaviors that heighten the effect of positive events on positive feelings. There are 3 temporal forms of Savoring: (1) Anticipatory (2) In the Moment and (3) Reminiscent. We can savor a positive event before it happens by getting excited in preparation for it, we can savor the positive event as it occurs and we can savor a positive event by remembering it. What are you savoring today?

February means birthday month. This year I celebrated a few weeks with a trip “up north” to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. We stayed at The Lodge on Lake Detroit which included the best buffet breakfast ever… (They had GF English Muffins) RD approved, Smores every night in the lobby (I ate the roasted marshmallows) and A+ customer service. We xc skied and snow shoed at Maplelag. Trails were well groomed and the limitless gluten filled cookie jar was awfully inviting. We ate dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Can you tell I am still adjusting to my gluten free diet! Will I ever adjust I ask myself?

It was extra special to see Brett and Sami and celebrate my birthday with them. We ate at Summer House Santa Monica. It was the first time I had burrata and it won’t be my last.
