SEPTEMBER '14

Dear Diary,

After a slew of activities and story sessions in July, August was largely low-key for us. We conducted just one but a very special story session, immersed ourselves in our 'Learning Through Stories' sessions that we conduct for schools across Bangalore and most importantly, Deeptha Vivekanand managed to take a much-needed and long pending break from her work and went on short weekend trip!

WORLD LITERACY DAY CELEBRATIONS WITH CRY

Ever After's story session celebrating the World Literacy Day

This was our second event for Child Rights and You (CRY) in two months. And this time, we were conducting a story session in Madiwala, South Bangalore for 9-11 year old underprivileged kids.

CRY'S initiative this time was to inspire these young kids about education and attending school regularly. So, we told them a story about going to school by translating
A Bus of Our Own  by Freddie Evans to Tamil.

GET LUCKY, PARTICIPATE IN THE CREATIVE EDUCATOR CONTEST!
This one is for every teacher, educator, parent and parent-educator. You know how much passionate we are about using stories as an teaching resource in the classrooms. All our work is centered around this one objective: harnessing the power of stories in the classroom to make learning easy, interesting and fun.

Now, here's your chance to try your hands at using stories to teach. And for that we have a contest just for you. What is this contest? The poster below will tell you. For the complete instructions, rules and contest guidelines, go to our blog.

EVER AFTER IN THE NEWS
Yes, we were in news recently. Our founder, Deeptha Vivekanand spoke to Indian Moms Connect, a popular blogging platform for Indian mothers across the globe. Deeptha shared her thoughts on the power of storytelling and storybooks in the classroom.

TEACHING THROUGH STORIES AT THE AMAATRA ACADEMY

In our August Newsletter , we talked about 'storifying' the social-science curriculum at The Amaatra Academy. The journey so  far has been an exciting one. Our minds have been stretched as we dive deep into research to find stories and create lesson plans to explain concepts like 'Early Humans', 'Democracy', 'French Revolution' and 'The Mughal Empire', to name a few. Students have come back with insightful responses to assignments, reflecting on the stories they listened to in class.

One 7th grader wrote this about 'Greatness' after a story on 'Akbar, The Great'. Here's an excerpt from the one-page submission:
