At 175, CCNY Celebrates With $1B Campaign
The City College of New York is celebrating its 175th anniversary with a $1B campaign to triple its endowment. The Campaign for City College: Doing Remarkable Things Together was announced on May 5 by President Vincent Boudreau at the 2022 Presidential Awards Dinner in the Great Hall. By embarking on this challenge at 175, CCNY rededicates itself to its founding vision to provide educational access to "the whole people" and ensures that this vital mission will serve countless future generations of students.
CCNY Welcomes Commencement Honorees
Keynote speaker Anthony S. Fauci, MD, and distinguished alumnus and documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson will be honored with the Class of 2022 at City College Commencement, on June 3. Fauci, America's counselor in the COVID-19 era, directs the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and is chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden. Stanley Nelson, CCNY '76, is the leading contemporary documentarian of the African American experience. Oscar-nominated for "Attica" this year, Nelson is a MacArthur Fellow and recipient of the National Medal in the Humanities.

Future View: Sustainable Quantum Electronics
Lia Krusin-Elbaum, professor of Physics in CCNY's Division of Science, leads a team whose research breakthrough could open a breadth of new quantum device platforms for harnessing emergent topological states for nano-spintronics and fault-tolerant quantum computing. The group of physicists and chemists has invented a facile and powerful technique that uses ionic hydrogen to reduce charge carrier density in the bulk of 3D topological insulators and magnets.

Meet the Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Rose Mary Biju and Ali Khalil are the 2022 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Biju has completed her undergraduate degree and is continuing in the BS/MD program at CCNY's CUNY School of Medicine. She conducts research as a Rudin Fellow and intends to pursue emergency medicine among underserved populations. Khalil, the recipient of numerous honors in the Division of Science, will receive his Bachelor of Science in Biology. Like the valedictorian, Khalil has gained clinical exposure as a hospital volunteer, and he plans a career in medicine and research.
I Am CCNY: Badiallo Diawara, Class of 2022
Art with a concentration in Digital Design, in CCNY's Division of Humanities and the Arts. I studied graphic design all through high school, and after winning the 2019 NYC High School Admissions Guide Cover Challenge, it gave me the extra push to study design.
CCNY Opportunities: I am participating in the Pentagram Portfolio Program, with Pentagram partner Paula Scher. This is extremely enriching to my education because it gives a perspective on how design works in the real world and in workplaces. It also gives a balance so I am not just getting a one-sided perspective on how design can be.

Experience "Cinema and Sanctuary"
The astonishing story of America's first documentary film school—CCNY's Institute of Film Techniques, founded in 1941—is playing this week at the virtual Harlem International Film Festival. Stream "Cinema and Sanctuary: Hans Richter & America's First Documentary Film School" through May 15 to discover how Richter—a Dadaist and pioneering experimental filmmaker seeking refuge from Nazi Germany—inspired his CCNY students and influenced the art of his era. The 2019 film by noted documentarian Dave Davidson, retired professor of Film in the Division of Humanities and Arts, captures the foundation Richter established of social activism, which remains a hallmark of CCNY film programs today.
