Stables Lane Improvement Project

Voting has now closed in the Tesco Bags of Help funding, our project was shortlisted to receive a grant of between £5,000 and £1,000 to kick start improvements at Stables Lane.  As soon as we know the result we will let you know.

The Project will develop an old playing field into a fully resourced local Park with multiple leisure facilities for the benefit of Boston Spa residents and other local people.  The provision of a picnic and barbeque area funded by this grant would be an excellent first step for the overall development.

Donation towards Stables Lane

At the February meeting the Parish Council was delighted to receive a donation of £6,300 from the former Village Society.  Janet McBride representing the Village Society advised that the society had recently closed and it was the wish of the members of the society that the balance of funds be donated to the Parish Council to be used to for a suitable project preferably at Stables Lane.

Many thanks to the members of the Village Society, watch this space for updates on Stables Lane.

Neighbourhood Plan Update

The Neighbourhood Plan for Boston Spa is almost finished and we hope the referendum will be held in the next few months giving electors in Boston Spa their chance to have a say on the future of our village.

Tour de Yorkshire is coming to Boston Spa

The Tour de Yorkshire will be coming through Boston Spa on Saturday 29th April and this year we will welcome both the women's and men's races as they make their way form Tadcaster to Harrogate on the second day of the TdY.

The women's race is expected to come through Boston Spa around 9.20am and the Mens' race about 2.15pm. Plans are being made to hold community events in and around Boston Spa including a 9km bike trail, street food and children's cycling activities so all you budding Bradley Wiggins dust off your bikes, lycra optional!

New Trees in Boston Spa

A small spinney was planted beside the car park at Church Fields on February 12th, to form a shelter belt for wildlife and link the area to the churchyard trees.  The planting plan and lay out for the scheme was drawn up by Anthony Hoult, of Garden Pride, who also directed operations on the day with a great team of volunteers organised by Boston-in-Bloom. The plants were provided free by 'I Dig Trees', a scheme run by Ovo energy in association with the Trust for Conservation Volunteers.

The Parish Council is due to take over the Public Open Space during the coming year and this newly planted area will then be managed as part of the general landscape maintenance.

A big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers!

Meet Our PCSOs

Our local Police Community Support Officer Emma Leighton hold regular sessions in the WiSE Owl cafe at the Village Hall for residents.  This gives you the opportunity to meet your local PCSO and have an informal chat about any issues or concerns.

The Police Commissioner's February Newsletter can be seen here

Primary School Provision in Boston Spa

One of the conditions placed upon Taylor Wimpey when planning permission was granted to develop Church Fields was for them to pay Leeds City Council (LCC) £500K specifically for work on Primary schools capacity in Boston Spa. This is intended to mitigate the impact of the increase in the population of school aged children.

Boston Spa Primary schools are full and the Parish Council are waiting for evidence of plans from LCC to alleviate the situation.

The PC has written to LCC and LCC councillors asking for an urgent update.

Walks around Boston Spa

The most popular links clicked on our monthly e-newsletter are the village walks, the Parish Council has developed 6 walking routes around the village ranging from 2 miles to 7  miles, you can download the walks from the PC website here

You can explore the High Street and the Riverside by following our blue plaque trail, you can down load a leaflet here

Street Scene

New litter bins
We continue to press LCC to provide litter bins in the vicinity of Gas Works Lane and Church Fields.
We are advised that funding is a problem and we are discussing the options to resolve .

Annual Newsletter

As we all move to a more digital age the Parish Council took the decision last year not to hand deliver our Newsletter to every home in the village this year. It will be available to view in full or download on our website www.bostonspapc.org.uk
Printed copies will also be available from the Library, Village Hall, Deepdale, St Mary’s Church, The Methodist Church, Doctors Surgery plus many of our shops on the High Street, naturally there will be a saving in printing costs and the considerable expense of delivery to every home, money we felt could be better spent on other areas in our village.

Jazz in the Spa - March 2017

More information at the Jazz in the Spa website
11th – Dave Mott’s Jazz Classics – a highly professional and versatile group led by maestro Dave on reeds. The group includes young trumpet star Jamie Brownfield and, for the second week running, our piano favourite, Tom Kincaid. Traditional jazz plus the standards coupled with vocals from the delightful Suzanne.
18th – Amy Roberts/John Hallam Quintet – one of the annual highlights with two of our most respected reeds players. They are guaranteed to serve up a delectable miscellany of the standards. And, yes, it’s Tom Kincaid again (!) on piano providing a sophisticated and swinging background to a musical evening par excellence! £10
25th – Tame Valley Stompers – otherwise known as Terry’s Dead Good Boys. As always, a warm welcome to our visitors from Cheshire. Led by one of the most respected Northern trombone players, the group is dedicated to unabashed traditional jazz - but with an wry sense of humour. Terry’s version of Ory’s Creole Trombone is legendary.

April 2017
1st – Echo 42 Big Band – Echo Four Two to be precise. Formed in Harrogate in 1984, the band describes itself as “Yorkshire’s longest continuous running and most versatile Big Band.” Now composed of musicians from across the county, we are assured of a wonderful evening of nostalgic sounds as the Band re-creates the hits of the 40s,50s and 60s. £10
