Help us bag a share of bag charge fund
Stables Lane Improvement Project, Boston Spa is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch the monthly funding scheme, which sees grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local outdoor community projects.
Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and this month shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.
Boston Spa Parish Council is one of the groups on the shortlist.
The Project will develop an old playing field into a fully resourced local Park with multiple leisure facilities for the benefit of Boston Spa residents and other local people. The provision of a picnic and barbeque area would be an excellent first step for the overall development.
Councillor Kevin Alderson says "We are very keen to get started on the improvement project and this funding would allow us to get a flying start. The provision of a picnic and Barbeque area is the ideal first step in getting local people to use the Stables Lane field and represents the perfect first step in our development work".
Voting is open in stores from 1 February to 25 February. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop. Our nearest store is at Collingham.
Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £25 million to more than 3,000 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups each month. At the end of each month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.

Stables Lane Update
The Parish Council have commissioned Groundwork to assist with the planning and implementation of the Stables Lane improvement project. You can learn more about Groundwork at www.groundwork.org.uk, well worth a visit. They are an organisation with the right mix of skills and experience to assist the Stables Lane Working Group with making their vision a reality.
As their website says…
The community charity with a green heart
Founder John Handley said…
“It’s the way we do things that matters most – achieving results through people. This means working with our partners in a way which empowers them and helps them achieve their objectives…”
And specifically in relation to “Green Spaces” their objectives match ours directly in delivering…
Places to play, grow, eat and meet
People who live in places that are greener, cleaner and safer are healthier and happier.
The fact that they are a “not for profit” charitable organisation, but highly professional, just adds to the attraction. We are very pleased to be working with them.
The first element of work is to do a full site survey. Followed closely by the facilitating the production of a “master plan” that will be used both to raise further funding as well as guide the development of various work packages to be tendered to interested suppliers.
On the subject of funding, please make absolutely sure that you vote for the “Stables Lane Picnic and BBQ Area” project in your local Tesco store!!! This will help us to get a larger financial contribution from the Tesco “Bags of Help” programme. A simple and practical action that every village resident can take towards improving Stables Lane for everyone in Boston Spa.

New Trees in Boston Spa
The Parish Council, in association with Boston in Bloom, is going to plant a small spinney of trees and lower shrubs in the large rectangle of grass between the Church Fields car park and the churchyard wall.
This will form a link of plant with the churchyard trees, will reduce the visual impact of the car park and will provide good wildlife refuge. The trees have arrived and are bare-rooted 'slips', only 1 - 3ft in height, and have been provided free, with stakes and rabbit guards, by OVO energy in partnership with The Conservation Volunteers (see: www.ovoenergy.com/i-dig-trees). OVO provides renewable energy and aims to plant 5 trees for each of their ‘Greener’ customers, which will result in over 250,00 trees being planted nationally.
Some will mature into forest trees, such as Beech, Hornbeam and Oak, others will be Hawthorn, Mountain Ash, Field Maple, Alder, Wild Cherry and there will be Guelder Rose, Blackthorn and similar hedgerow plants. All are native species.
Boston in Bloom are providing the workforce and it is planned for 12th February 2017.
