BREAKING: U.S. Judge confirms Trump administration’s Austin ICE raids were politically motivated

Austin American-Statesman: “the sting was retribution” for Sheriff Hernandez’s new ICE policy

As additional questions mount, Austin families deserve answers

Austin -- The following statement was released by Workers Defense Project Executive Director Jose P. Garza, regarding today's report by the Austin American-Statesman that Judge Andrew Austin admitted being briefed by federal agents that recent Austin Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids were “retribution” for Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez decision to curtail her cooperation with ICE.

“Today’s news confirms our worst fears and calls into question the legitimacy of recent enforcement actions,” said Garza. “Many law abiding Austin families were in fact politically targeted in those ICE raids by the Trump administration and the Department of Homeland Security must immediately provide our community with answers.”

Today’s news comes just two days before a deadline for DHS to respond to a Freedom of Information Act Request filed earlier this year by WDP and its allies to determine whether ICE raids were, in fact, politically motivated.
