From the Principal

As another school year passes I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support. Long Bay College enjoys a wonderful community - something that I believe is becoming increasingly rare and valuable in today's society.

Best of luck to our departing Year 13 students. For many of you, it will seem like a distant dream when you first began your journey here. Through your own resolve, your commitment to personal growth, and the support of your families and friends, you persevered to make your time at Long Bay College a great experience. Enjoy the next chapter in your lives, but please stay in touch by joining our Alumni through the Long Bay College website.

To all our students, staff, families and friends, have a safe and peaceful summer holiday.

Russell Brooke
Principal

Junior Prizegiving

It seems like only yesterday Long Bay College welcomed its2016 Year 9 students to the school and already they are finishing their first year with us. This term has been very busy with junior exams, camps and numerous sporting and cultural events, and the students certainly deserve a well-earned rest.

Over the last few weeks it has been great seeing so many of our students' efforts and achievements acknowledged at the Arts, Sports and Academic Prizegivings, and at the Year 9 Junior Prizegiving. Congratulations to all of our winners.

Leavers Assembly
Congratulations to our International Students who are leaving Long Bay College this year. The school has welcomed students from all over the world in 2016 who have immersed themselves in the school community and contributed a wonderful flair and flavour to Long Bay College. Best of luck with your adventures, you will be missed!

Connor Bell
Congratulations to Year 10 student Connor Bell who competed in the Junior section at the National Secondary Schools in the weekend.

Last year (as a Year 9 student) Connor won the Discus title with a throw of 48.75m. This year he won the title by throwing 65m. Not only this, but he also broke the New Zealand Secondary Schools Junior record by 7m!  This record of 58.12m was set in 2009 by Jacko Gill who has since moved on to represent New Zealand in the Olympics in Shotput. But Connor didn’t only break it once, he broke it four times in a row setting the final distance with his 5th throw. During the competition 4 out of 6 of his throws were past the previous record (all over 63m).

Connor also went on to compete in the Junior Boys Shotput where he was able to win that event also, with a throw of 15.7m.

This is an incredible achievement Connor - well done on your wonderful success!

Year 9 Camp
This year Long Bay College once again held its incredible and very popular Year 9 Survival Challenge Camp.  After six years running, this has become a much loved school tradition.

The students spent two night camping in tents at Whatipu Lodge campground. Guided by the teachers, the students climbed the rugged Waitakere mountain tops, descended the lush kiwi bush valleys and criss-crossed rivers to finally emerge on the wild West coast. After a day of exploring beaches, cooking for themselves, building bridges in teams, being led blindfolded into the bush and spelunking through the caves, our students finished the journey by walking the last several kilometres up the isolated coastline to be bused home from Karekare Beach.
LBC Planting Day
The new pedestrian entrance to Long Bay College has now been transformed into a native garden. This is part of the OASIS project that the Ecolution Sustainability Group has been working on all year. Thanks to a funding grant from Hibiscus and Bays Local Board, as well as fundraising throughout the year, it is great to see all this wonderful planting. Many thanks to all the volunteers who came along to help out!
Waitangi Trip

Long Bay College Year 10 art student Bea Terreblanche won the top prize for the Waitangi trust art competition earlier this year.

‘Our Nations Children’ was a nationwide student art competition as part of an initiative aimed at having every child visit Waitangi before they leave school to better understand New Zealand’s Heritage. Our Nation's Children started in 2013 with the goal to inspire and educate the next generation of New Zealanders to know and understand the history of the birthplace of New Zealand, and encourage more people to visit Waitangi and Northland.

Thanks to Bea’s success in the competition, 15 Long Bay College students were able to visit the Treaty grounds staying at the adjacent hotel. The activities during their 3 day stay included learning to chant and paddle a waka, visiting the Waitangi museum, sailing, and swimming with the dolphins.

A great time was had by all. Congratulations once again to Bea!
