“These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1 Pet. 1:7, NIV).

The Trial of Your Faith

German theologian Jürgen Moltmann underwent a personal identity crisis during his experience as a POW in World War II which eventually led to his conversion to Christ.  Writing later of the importance of Christian identity, he asserted that Christian identity becomes most evident when threatened.   This is true of other Christian virtues: “In exile one seeks home. In alienation one seeks identity. Love is revealed in hatred and peace in conflict.” [1]  I might add that faith is revealed in trials.  The difficulties of life reveal the true character of the Christian.  Peter reaffirms that the trials of the Christian life prove the genuineness of our faith (1 Pet. 1:7, NIV).

Has your faith ever been tested?  Mine certainly has over the past year. This time last year, Carla and I were praying about and struggling with the idea of returning to Africa.  I remember well the intense soul-searching and agony.   We didn’t know what to do!  Finally, after much struggle, we assumed the challenge of raising over $60,000.  I am pleased to report to you that God has enabled us to raise sufficient support to return to Africa!  We are very pleased, and we say, “Praise the Lord!”

We have made flight plans already and will depart from Nashville, Tennessee at 10:38 a.m. on Monday, December 29.  We should arrive in Nairobi, Kenya at 11:25 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30.

Between now and then, we have a lot to prepare: international driving permits, entry visas to Kenya, purchases for items to take with us, packing, etc.  We also want to spend some special time with friends and family before our departure.

We request your prayers as we make this transition.  Thank you in advance for your support and prayers.  Your support has made it possible!  We are excited!

Many of you have made pledges to support our ministry, thank you!  Without your continued financial support and prayer, we will not make it.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We wish you a merry Christmas!  As we look back on this year, we are grateful for the blessings and leadership of the Lord.  We extend our wishes for a very merry Christmas from our family to you!

May you experience the blessings of the Lord in the coming year!  As you may have noted, we should be in Nairobi before the beginning of the New Year.

Prayer Requests

  • Pray for us as we make preparations for our journey (immunizations, work permits, etc.).
  • Pray for Russ as he begins to prepare for teaching classes.
  • Pray for safety in travel.
  • Pray that we will have sufficient funds to serve without undue concern.
  • Pray for Rachelle and Joe as they adjust to married life and for Seth as he continues his studies.

Praise the Lord!

Over the past few months, we have had the opportunity to visit a lot of amazing churches.  We have presented our story and have raised funds for our venture in Africa; however, we have also had the privilege of raising funds for World Evangelism Funds.  We have held several Faith Promise services and were grateful for the opportunity to represent missions for the Church of the Nazarene.   In three Faith Promise services, believers pledged over $44,000!  While World Evangelism Fund does not directly support our own ministry, we are grateful for the on-going work of the Lord around the world.  We are glad to be a part of it!
