Spring Newsletter

This is our third newsletter of the 2016-17 season for Waverley Singers supporters.  It gives you details about our forthcoming concert in Aldershot, as well as news from our charities for recent concerts, and next season’s plans.

Israel in Egypt

The Waverley Singers will perform Handel's spectacular oratorio Israel in Egypt with its regular baroque orchestra partners, the Brandenburg Baroque Soloists, at St Andrew's Garrison Church, Aldershot, on Saturday 25th March at 7:30 p.m.  We also welcome back soloists Thomas Erlank (tenor) and Richard Walshe (bass) as well as Davidona Pittock (soprano), Rosanna Cooper (mezzo) and Nicholas Mogg (bass) who all make their first appearance with the choir.

The story ranges from the tribulations of the Israelites under the domination of the Egyptians, through their escape across the Red Sea, to celebration and triumph on their release. It's a big sing for the choir, with many powerful choruses to portray the events described in the text. The libretto for Israel in Egypt is by Charles Jennens, famous for Messiah, which was premiered some five years later.

Israel in Egypt has been popular with choral societies since the 19th century; for many years, one of the earliest known recordings of music was a wax cylinder of a performance by 5000 singers at the Crystal Palace Handel Festival of 1888. Waverley Singers has performed it once before, in 1996, so we're looking forward to presenting these dramatic choruses to a new audience. We hope you enjoy it.

Tickets are £15 (£5 for students and U16s) and can be obtained from any Waverley Singers member, by telephone from 01252 792563, online from, from Newbury Building Society, Alton, and at the door.  Sadly, the option to buy over the counter at Lloyd & Keyworth in Farnham is no longer available, as we understand that the business has gone 'Internet only'.

After the concert, there will be a retiring collection for The Fountain Centre at St Luke's Hospital, Guildford.

Charity Results

Our charities for the first two concerts of this season, Cardiac Rehab Alton and Arthritis Research UK had very successful retiring collections.  Cardiac Rehab raised a total of £1093 including a pledge of £500, and Arthritis Research collected £476.  The charities and Waverley Singers would like to give a big 'thank you' to all of our supporters, patrons and members who made these substantial contributions to these very worthwhile causes.

2017-18 Season

We're very excited about our plans for next season.  The flagship events will be our collaboration with Romsey Choral Society in two performances of the Verdi Requiem.  The first concert will be at Romsey Abbey on Saturday 11th November 2017, and then our 'home' performance will be at Guildford Cathedral on Saturday 27th January 2018.

Messiah - title pageBefore that, we are planning a 'Messiah from Scratch' at Farnham Maltings for Saturday 14th October.  This should be a massive event, with orchestra and soloists, a wonderful opportunity to sing one of the greatest pieces of the choral repertoire locally.

After the Romsey trip, our traditional Christmas concert takes place on Saturday 16th December at St Andrew's Church.  We'll give more news as arrangements and content are firmed up, but you can see that the choir will have a very busy start to next season, with events every month from October to January, with a great deal of fine music to entertain and inspire you.

Thank you...
