Christmas Newsletter

This is our second newsletter of the 2016-17 season to Waverley Singers supporters.  It's a busy time of year for many people, and the same is true for the Waverley Singers.  We have an event each month from now until March, and we hope you will be able to join us for one or more of these.

Christmas concert

Our traditional Christmas concert, with carols for the audience and Christmas readings, takes place at St Andrew's Church, Farnham, on Saturday 17th December.

The programme includes an attractive mixture of traditional and modern Christmas music, including Cecilia McDowall's Christ is the Morning Star, a beautiful setting first performed in 2015 of words by the Venerable Bede, who was writing in the more distant past.  The concert promises to be great fun for all.  You can download a copy of the flyer by clicking on the image on the right.

If you usually buy concert tickets through a Waverley Singers member, please continue to do so, but otherwise they are avaialble from:
  • Lloyd & Keyworth, Downing Street, Farnham
  • Newbury Building Society, 47 High Street, Alton
  • by telephone - 01252 792563
  • online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/waverleysingers (no card charges), and
  • on the door, subject to availability.

Waverley Singers Patrons have the exclusive benefit of reserved seating at our concerts; you can find out more on our web site Patrons page.

Alton concert

We had a fantastic turnout on 5th November, with just under 200 in the audience, by some distance our best on record for Alton.  We enjoyed a feast of choral classics together with some fine individual pieces by by Alex Otterburn, our baritone soloist, and Phil Scriven on the organ.   Another record was made: the collection for Cardiac Rehab, together with another donation promised on the evening that was indeed forthcoming, resulted in a total contribution including Gift Aid of £1093.60 to the charity.  Thank you to all who made this possible!

Open Rehearsal

After the Christmas break, the choir's rehearsals resume on 5th January, and our first important event of the year is the Open Rehearsal on Thursday 12th.  We welcome anyone who would like to try out the choir with a view to joining or re-joining.  If you would like to attend, please contact Carolyn Patey, secretary@waverleysingers.com

Come & Sing

This season's Come & Sing event will take place on 18th February 2017 at St Thomas On The Bourne.  We'll be rehearsing Handel's Israel in Egypt, which is the subject of our big concert of the year, in Aldershot in March.  You can find full details including the timetable for the day on the choir's web site

This time, we are running bookings entirely online, using TicketSource: www.ticketsource.co.uk/waverleysingers (no card fees at present).  You'll need to choose one ticket at a time, so that you can give your voice section, but then you can pay for multiple tickets in one transaction.

As we're using a new venue, we have good facilities, and a sandwich lunch supplied by our chosen caterer is included as  part of the ticket price.  Tea and coffee will also be available at the breaks.  Please e-mail secretary@waverleysingers.com if you have special dietary requirements. The visitor (public) prices are

Singers, own score - £18.00
Singers, hire score - £20.00

When you complete your booking, an e-ticket will be sent to your e-mail address.

If you normally book through a Waverley Singers member, they can take your payment and we'll then arrange for the e-ticket to be sent.  All members have been circulated with information on how to do this.

We'll finish the day at 16:00 with a 'sing through' performance; audience admission will be free of charge, and a retiring collection will be made.

Scholarship Scheme for Young Singers

Our Scholarship scheme has been launched, with publicity at the Farnham Competitive Music Festival and new flyers.

Our aim is to encourage young people aged 18 - 26 into choral singing. Full details are available on the scholarships page of the choir web site, along with an application form.  We are planning for a first round of auditions in January, so if you know any young singer that may be interested, please tell them and pass them a flyer (available at rehearsals).  Closing date for this phase is 19th December.

Verdi Requiem and 2017-18 Season

We are working on plans to perform Verdi's Requiem in collaboration with Romsey Choral Society next winter.  We'll do this on a 'home and away' basis.  Here are the dates for your diary: the away fixture will be at Romsey Abbey on Saturday 11th November 2017; our home performance will be at Guildford Cathedral on Saturday 27th January 2018.  We'd like to arrange a local event between June and Christmas, so we are also looking at ideas for a concert in October 2017.  We'll give you more news as the ideas develop.

Thank you...
