MB Bleeding Disorders Program Announcement

The Manitoba Bleeding Disorders Program has communicated with the Chapter that nurse coordinator, Dawn Zawadski, has taken a personal leave of absence. While they do anticipate that Dawn will return to the Program, they have posted her position to help nurse clinician, Crystalynne San Juan, in the interim.

Along with the members of the Program, we extend our support to Crystalynne and ask for your patience if response times are a little slower than usual. Please remember that in an emergency, you can reach out to a Hematologist on call.

We wish Dawn all the best.

Get Ready for School!

The approaching school year for parents of children with inherited bleeding disorders can mean a new teacher, or even a new school. There are some resources that can help you build a positive relationship with your child’s school. The more prepared the school is, the safer your child is! Follow the links to the CHS website where you can download PDFs of the following booklets:

Sports Bursary Funding Available

Are you looking at fall sports programs for your child with an inherited bleeding disorder?

The Sports Bursary program is a CHS-MC funded program to promote a healthy lifestyle for children and youth with bleeding disorders through safe physical activities. Chapter youth, 16 years or younger, with a moderate or severe bleeding disorder qualify to apply.

The chosen activity must be approved by a Manitoba Bleeding Disorders Program physiotherapist. Please visit Sports Bursary Program for an application and to learn more!

Learning to learn and passing it on

The Canadian Hemophilia Society retreat entitled Learning to learn and passing it on was initiated as a result of the session on aging with a bleeding disorder held during Rendez-vous 2017. Its goal is to address current needs of people ageing with a bleeding disorder and to help address future needs. The CHS will offer about 30 sponsorships to enable Canadian men and women, aged 60 years and over, living with a bleeding disorder, and/or their caregiver/support person, to attend the retreat taking place at the Chantecler Hotel in Sainte-Adèle, Quebec, November 2-4, 2018.

For the purpose of this workshop, the expression “caregiver” or “support person” is defined as an unpaid person, usually within the family environment, who provides personal assistance, emotional support and/or physical care to a person with a bleeding disorder, 60 years of age or older.

The sponsorship program is open to Canadian men and women with an inherited bleeding disorder, aged 60 and over. The retreat is also open to their caregivers / support persons whether they attend with the person they care for or not.

A Selection Committee will choose the participants from the received applications based on their qualifications, and geographical criteria to ensure national representation (as much as possible) and a good balance among participant profiles.

Interested participants must complete the attached application form and forward it to the CHS before 5 p.m. September 14, 2018. Sponsorship recipients will be notified by late September.

For more information and a copy of the application form, please visit our website at: https://www.hemophilia.ca/learning-to-learn-and-passing-it-on/

2018 Golf Tournament September 4th Needs HELP!

There are a number of ways that members can help with the tournament and we could use your help!
1) Tell your golfer friends! This is a fun tournament, the volunteers are fantastic and Bridges is a gorgeous course. The more golfers we have, the greater our capacity to provide programs and services. Registration info is below.
2) Sponsors - We are looking for a Lunch Sponsor. This can be a company wiling to donate $500 towards lunch or a company that will provide lunch.
3) Make a Donation - We need prizes for the golfers. The less we purchase, the more funds go into programs and services. If you have no idea what kind of prize to donate, gift cards from places like Golf Town, Walmart, Canadian Tire, Cabela's, and Costco will help us as either a prize or allow us to purchase what we need. Any gift card is appreciated!
4) Volunteer - It takes a small army of smiling faces to execute a golf tournament. We have been so lucky to have wonderful volunteers working with our golfers. There are a variety of positions, so if you are interested, contact the office and we'll find a job that works for you!

Proceeds from the Golf Tournament help CHS-MC and CLF-MR provide education, services, support and advocacy for our members living with hepatitis, liver disease and bleeding disorders. We hope that you will pitch in and help!
