GSC Delays Start of Fall Competition

The Gulf South Conference will delay the start of intercollegiate competition in the fall semester to either the last week of September or the first week of October.

Administrators from across the league will jointly work on a schedule that fits the timeline for competition in an effort to provide a meaningful fall competition season for conference members. To accommodate this new schedule, soccer and volleyball will exclusively play against conference opponents. Additionally, a corresponding delay to the beginning of official practices will be instituted.

New schedules and additional details on implementation of the delayed fall season will be distributed by the conference as they are approved by the membership. The conference will continue to monitor the situation and will be prepared to make any further changes prior to the start of practice for the adjusted championship segment.

Student Highlights

A total of 1,313 teams have earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2019-2020 season, the United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced recently. Among those honored were Montevallo’s volleyball program who have matched their dedication to the sport of volleyball with excellence in the classroom.

The team’s cumulative GPA of 3.69 was amongst the top 35 highest in the country, allowing them to earn this honor for the 12th consecutive year. “I am proud of our student-athletes for doing well in the classroom,” head coach Katie O’Brien said. “Spring semester was a challenge with virtual learning, but they rose to the occasion. We have quite the tradition, 12 consecutive years, and I hope it continues.”

The award, initiated in the 1992-1993 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale. “Coaches have the most influence during difficult times,” said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. “Keeping student-athletes focused on their academic success when their volleyball identity was suddenly gone is leadership worth celebrating!”
