Submit a Design for UM’s Homecoming Coloring Book
UM’s Alumni Office is currently accepting designs for a Montevallo-themed coloring book. All students, alumni, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit their best digital image (outlines of iconic UM structures, landmarks or scenes) in PDF format. All entries must be received by umalumnioffice@montevallo.edu by Friday, Jan. 20 with the artist’s name, class year and phone number under the subject line “UM Coloring Book.”

Eligible entries will be submitted for a drawing for a pair of Saturday College Night tickets as well as a dinner gift certificate. Contact Dr. Tracy Payne Rockco with any questions.

UM to Celebrate MLK Jr. Day with Guest Speaker
On Jan. 18, the University will host Reverend Michael Wortham, the Youth Minister of Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Wortham fuses a love of God with hip-hop culture to craft a unique blended message of spiritual and social activism. Wortham will hold a presentation and discussion to celebrate the legacy and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in LeBaron Auditorium at 3:30 p.m.

UM Seeks Representatives at COPLAC’s Undergraduate Research Conference
Each year, the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) hosts an undergraduate research conference during the spring semester. The event allows undergrad students to network and gain experience by presenting their research in front of peers from across the country. This year’s event will be held at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise on April 21 and 22.

Faculty mentors are urged to encourage their students involved in Undergraduate Research Day to consider participating. Each student must submit an application with a faculty mentor endorsement and a detailed outline of the presentation to URProgram@montevallo.edu by Feb. 15.

Montevallo United Wins First UWCA Social Media Challenge
A team of five UM students placed first in United Way of Central Alabama’s (UWCA) inaugural Social Media Challenge. Matthew Crowson, Mollie Wyatt, Taylor Teems, Emme Long and Madden Saverse, with supervision by faculty mentors Dr. Amiee Mellon and Dr. Tiffany Wang, created a multi-faceted campaign designed to broaden UWCA’s reach. The Montevallo United team was presented with a check on Friday, Jan. 13, from blr/further, a Birmingham-based marketing firm. The students will give a brief presentation on their winning campaign at UWCA’s annual meeting on Jan. 24.

SAC Pool Closed Indefinitely
Due to maintenance issues, the pool at the McChesney Student Activity Center is closed until further notice.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

Opera Birmingham will present “Three Decembers,” a contemporary, 90-minute opera sung in English this weekend. Theatre Department Chair, Dr. David Callaghan directed the production with UM Staff Accompanist, Dr. Laurie Middaugh as music director and accompanist. The show runs two performances, Friday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 22, at 2:30 p.m. at the Red Mountain Theatre Company cabaret space. A buy one, get one free deal for tickets is available on Opera Birmingham’s website by entering promotion code “BOGO” at checkout.

Dr. Andrea Eckelman, assistant professor of political science, was recently voted in as the secretary of the Women’s Caucus while attending the annual meeting of the Southern Political Science Association.

Dr. Bruce Finklea, assistant professor of mass communication, wrote a chapter recently published in “Race and Gender In Electronic Media.” The chapter, titled “Nurturing New Men and Polishing Imperfect Fathers Via Hetero-and Homosocial Relationships in Pixar Films” was primarily based on Finklea’s grad school dissertation.
 
Dr. Scott Meyer, professor of art, will have several of his ceramic sculptures displayed across the country this semester. The first of his work can be seen at Spring Hill College in Mobile until Feb. 2 and will then move to the Kiln Gallery in Fairhope until Feb. 25.

UM to Host ACT Prep Camp
On Feb. 4, the University will host an ACT Prep Camp from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All students of UM employees will receive a 20 percent discount off the regular $100 price. The majority of students who have participated in this camp have seen an increase of two to seven points on their ACT score. Register students

UM Bookstore Holding Clearance Sale
The UM Barnes and Noble bookstore is running a clearance sale from now until the end of January. All clearance items are 75 percent off their current clearance price. Further, all Champion apparel is buy one, get one 50 percent off.
