Families First Coronavirus Response Act

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act is a federal law that was passed specifically to provide relief to employees directly affected by COVID-19 by providing expanded leave for specified reasons. For information regarding the act, please visit UM’s informational page.


#GivingTuesdayNow a Success

Thanks to generous members of the University of Montevallo community, more than $48,000 was raised to support COVID-19 student relief efforts culminating with the May 5 #GivingTuesdayNow event. Thank you for supporting students during this difficult time.

University Tickets Gets a New Look

Don’t be surprised when you visit University Tickets to purchase tickets for UM’s next event. It was recently upgraded and looks great! Community School of Music Offering Online Lessons

The Community School of Music is currently accepting summer 2020 private music lesson registration for all instruments. All summer lessons will be conducted online, providing a convenient and safe way to offer music lessons to everyone at home.

The CSM will offer eight lessons, once per week, starting in June and wrapping up the end of July. To enroll, simply follow the steps below.

Step 1 – Register for lessons online.
Step 2 – An instructor will call you to coordinate and schedule online lessons.
Step 3 – Make your first payment.
Step 4 – Enjoy your private one-on-one lessons with your instructor.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

Dr. Amiee Mellon, associate professor of marketing, and Kira Thomas, director of University Marketing & Communications, recently completed the Leadership Shelby County program. Graduation from the program has been re-scheduled for late August. Leadership Shelby County is designed to develop the leadership potential in our community. By providing a collaboration of knowledge coupled with understanding, LSC equips leaders with necessary skills and abilities to enhance the economic growth and development of Shelby County.

Dr. Steve Parker received the College of Arts and Sciences’ 2020 Teaching Award at the recent college meeting. The award recognizes “an impressive teacher” among CAS faculty “who has a significant positive impact on our students.” Department chairs nominate and select each year’s recipient. Parker has taught sociology at UM since 1992 and continues to engage students with new course offerings and regular updates to his classes. Congratulations to Parker on this well-deserved recognition!

Student Highlights

UM outfielder Alexis Cortez has been named the 2020 Gulf South Conference Softball Champion Scholar Athlete. The GSC is giving out the Champion Scholar Athlete Award to recognize the hard work of student athletes in the classroom. The GPA is based on the most recently completed term, and the individual must have a minimum of 48 credit hours to be eligible for the award. Cortez, a junior biology major out of Bonaire, Georgia, has a 4.0 GPA and has completed 84 credit hours.

Despite the short season, UM men’s lacrosse player Kyle Little captured a GLVC Player of the Week award at the end of April. Little is a junior goalkeeper from West Milford, New Jersey.
