Donate Spare Coats and Blankets for Shelby Emergency Assistance

In response to the extremely cold weather, the President's Office and the Office of Service Learning have launched a coat and blanket drive to support Shelby Emergency Assistance.

Donations can be dropped off at Calkins Hall or at GLOCO (845 Valley St.) until Friday, Jan. 19.

Registration Open for UM Community School of Music & Children’s Musicianship Class

The UM Community School of Music offers music lessons for all ages and abilities in the community. Lessons are offered in piano, voice, guitar, violin, trumpet, flute, French horn, trombone, clarinet, mandolin, ukulele and organ.

Additionally, there is a no-cost musicianship class for children ages 5 to 11. In this class, students will play interactive music games, learn about famous composers, listen to music from around the world and create their own compositions. These classes will be held on Monday nights from 6 to 6:45 p.m. beginning Jan. 22.

UM Green Fund Calling for 2018 Proposals

The UM Green Fund is a pool of money used to provide grants for campus projects that improve sustainability, decrease our ecological footprint and educate the University and local communities about sustainable practices, environmental issues and caring for the planet.
The Green Fund has $7,000 available. Any member of the current UM community, including students and student groups, can write a Green Fund grant proposal.

Spring ACT Prep Camps Begin Jan. 20

UM will continue to host ACT Prep Camps for high school students throughout the spring semester. The total cost of each camp is $110, which includes lunch and a snack. Children of UM faculty and staff members are eligible to receive a special scholarship that will take 20 percent off the total cost of the camp.

The first session of the semester will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20 and the second session will be March 24. Register online.

Campus Bookstore Stocked With Spring Textbooks

The UM Campus Bookstore is fully stocked with all necessary textbooks for Spring 2018. They will price match all textbooks from Amazon, Barnes & and local competitors. Extended hours for Jan. 8-14 are as follows:

  • Monday-Thursday: 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Friday: 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • Sunday: Closed

The bookstore will also be open on MLK Day, Jan. 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Faculty & Staff Highlights

Scott Dillard MBA ’17 has recently been named UM’s vice president for advancement and external affairs. Most recently, Scott served as special assistant to the president and executive director of advancement. Read more about Scott’s dedicated service to UM. 
Deborah Mauldin, adjunct faculty, exercise and nutrition science, will be presenting a Butoh show at the Birmingham Museum of Art on Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. This event will feature Montevallo alumnae Kris Rayfield Saab and Celeste LaBord Houma dancing in their own choreography. Butoh, post-WWII movement theatre, was pioneered by Mauldin in the 1990s when she taught dance and directed the Orchesis Performing Group sponsored by the former Kinesiology Department.
Dr. Scott Meyer, professor of art, was invited to host a one-man exhibition of his ceramic sculptures from the Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taipei, Taiwan. Located in the district known as New Taipei, the museum is one of the most influential exhibition venues in Asia for contemporary ceramic art. Meyer will be selecting exhibition dates for 2020.
Dr. Eun-Hee Park, assistant professor of music, returned from her concert tour with cellist Katherine Decker, assistant professor of cello at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. They presented concerts featuring Rachmaninoff’s cello sonata and few selections of songs at Florida State University and at the University of Alabama on Nov. 14 and 15 respectively.
Lee Somers, assistant professor of art, and Scott Stephens, professor art, have their collaborative work with Elisabeth Pellathy of UAB, The Cahaba River Watershed Project, on view at the Cahaba River Society/PaperWorkers Local in Birmingham until Jan 27.
Scott Stephens, professor of art, had printmaking work included in the National Printmaking Invitational at the Paducah School of Art and Design, Kentucky, on view between Nov 16 and Dec. 13.
UM Art faculty Michael Willett, Ryan Foster, Lee Somers, Tanner Young and Amy Feger have their work on view in “Uncommon Territory: Contemporary Art in Alabama,” an invitational exhibition organized by the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in celebration of the bicentennial of the state of Alabama. The show runs until Jan. 21.
