Spring Commencement May 5

The University has announced that the speaker for the Spring Commencement ceremony, May 5, will be character actor Michael O’Neill.

O’Neill has appeared in dozens of films, including “Seabiscuit,” “Transformers,” “Secondhand Lions,” “Traffic” and “Dallas Buyers Club.” On the small screen, he has played recurring characters in “The West Wing,” “Extant,” “Rectify,” “Scandal,” “S.W.A.T,” “The Romanoffs” and “The Resident.”

O’Neill has also served as a board member of the Hollywood Branch of the Screen Actors Guild and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In addition to O’Neill’s keynote address, the University of Montevallo is proud to recognize alumna Dr. Milly Slater Barranger ’58 with an honorary doctorate degree for her achievements.

Spring Commencement will be held Saturday, May 5, at 9 a.m. at Flowerhill. A reception for graduates and their families hosted by the UM National Alumni Association will precede the ceremony at 7:30 a.m. on King Quad.

Advancement to Host Senior Day Lunch

On Friday, May 4, the Office of Advancement will host a fundraiser lunch on Flowerhill before graduation rehearsal. Between 2:30 and 4 p.m., faculty, staff and the senior class are encouraged to come out and make a minimum $5 donation for a lunch consisting of a Chik-fil-A sandwich and Frios pop.

These contributions will benefit the senior class project to jumpstart a book emergency scholarship which will address the increasing financial needs of our students. RSVP by Monday, April 30.
 

UM to host CoffeeNET event for local businesses

On Tuesday, May 8, join the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and the Montevallo Chamber of Commerce for CoffeeNET in Farmer Hall from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The morning meeting is designed for investors to enjoy networking, coffee and light refreshments — all before heading to the office.
 

Dining Services Announces May Food Options

The dining hall will close after dinner service, May 4 and will reopen for breakfast service May 29. Summer hours will begin May 29 which are (excluding ODP):

Breakfast: 7 to 9 a.m.
Lunch: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Dinner: 4 to 6 p.m.
Weekends: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (cooked to order grill only, unless a camp is visiting)

From May 7 to May 25, Einstein’s will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. serving coffee drinks and a limited food menu for faculty and staff to have a lunch dining option.

Catering is available from May 5 to May 24 for any events or meetings, but the kitchen will be offline May 25 for annual pest control and will reopen May 29.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

Carey Heatherly, archive & special collections librarian/associate professor, has been selected as the 2018 Faculty Service Award winner. Heatherly will receive his award at the Founders’ Day convocation in the fall.
 
Dr. Alexander Mechitov, professor of management information systems, has been announced as the Michael J. and Donna H. Grainger Endowed Chair in Business and Accounting for a term of three years, effective Aug. 19, 2018.
