Pen Strokes of Justice Event to Feature Readings of Historical Civil Rights Documents
On Thursday, Feb. 23, students and other volunteers will read the historical documents of a famous racially charged Alabama court case from the 1930s. The event, Pen Strokes of Justice: Judge Horton and the Scottsboro Boys, stems from the 1933 retrial of one of nine black teens accused of sexually assaulting a white woman.

Before the retrial, the judge, James E. Horton Jr., received hundreds of letters, telegrams and other correspondence from people around the world denouncing the case. The judge later lost his judicial career when he overturned the jury’s guilty verdict.

In addition to the readings, Rebekah Davis, Limestone County archivist and Alabama Humanities Foundation Road Scholar, will speak on the trial and its significance.

The event starts at 6 p.m. in Comer Auditorium. Those who wish to volunteer to read one of the documents should contact Dr. Erin Chandler at 205-665-6420 or email. Readers are also encouraged to show up 30 minutes early and sit near the front.

Job Request Forms Available for 7th Annual Big Event
The Big Event, an annual University-wide community service project, is set for Saturday, April 8. Each year, students from various University organizations, clubs and teams go out into the community to help residents and businesses with yard work, maintenance or other cleaning tasks.

Anyone interested in obtaining a student organization’s help should fill out a job request form available by email request or in the Student Life office in Farmer Hall. These forms should be turned in or emailed to the Student Life office by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 17.
