Nominations Sought for 2017-18 University Scholar
Nominations are now open for the 2017-18 University Scholar. This scholar is named in acknowledgement of exceptional achievement in areas of research, creativity and scholarship.

The recipient is later recognized during the Founders’ Day Convocation with a plaque and monetary award of $1,250. The scholar later gives a presentation to the University community before the end of the academic year.

Each nominee must be a faculty member who has completed at least five years of service at UM in a tenured-track or tenured position. This person must also have produced a body of work considered excellent by an audience of peers beyond UM.

Letters of nomination should be sent either as attached Word documents or within the body of an email to Dr. Jim Murphy, chair of the University Scholar Selection Committee, by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 24.

Open-Enrollment Registration for the Child Study Center
The UM child study center program is now accepting applications for the 2017-18 school year. Enrollment is open for all three- and four-year-olds who are residents of the state of Alabama.

All applications should be requested from Dr. Laura Bloom and submitted to her by May 1. In addition to completing the registration form, a utility bill is required for proof of residence. Blue immunization forms are also required before a child enters school.
 
UM Police Offer Discreet Drug Take Back Box
All expired or unused prescriptions and medicines can be dropped off safely and discreetly with the Drug Take Back Box in the UM Police office. The box is available 24/7 for all drop-offs.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

Dr. Clark Hultquist, professor of history, presented a paper, “Contemporary Remembrance: The Battle of Verdun in the Public Eye 1916,” at France and the Memory of the Great War: An Interdisciplinary Conference, hosted by the University of South Alabama on March 3.

Dr. Heather Tinsley, assistant professor of biology and the 2016 University Scholar, is the new director of the Malone Center for Excellence in Teaching. Tinsely will begin her new position in August.

Dr. Jennifer Rickel, assistant professor in the Department of English and Foreign Languages, recently participated in the panel Re-visioning Refugees: Transnational Interventions at the 26th Annual British Commonwealth and Postcolonial Studies Conference in Savannah, Georgia. She presented a paper titled “Unpacking the Refugee in Abdulrazak Gurnah’s ‘By the Sea’.”

Dr. Tiffany Wang, assistant professor of communication, is the recipient of the 2017 Central States Communication Association Outstanding New Teacher Award. She will be recognized at the Hall of Fame Awards Luncheon and Business Meeting at the 2017 CSCA convention held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in mid-March.

Dr. Wang has also recently co-authored two articles accepted this month for publication at the “Journal of Divorce and Remarriage.”

Student Highlights

Amber James is one of 12 FCS majors in the country selected by the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences to participate in their National Leadership Academy.

This academy serves as a training ground for future FCS professionals to take future leadership positions in the AAFCS. It will take place in June prior to the 2017 AAFCS annual conference in Dallas held June 24-25.

University Happenings

Sustainability Workshop Seeks Campus Input
On March 10, faculty, staff, students and administration will join from 2 to 5 p.m. in Anna Irvin Dining Hall for a community brainstorming session to help inform future UM sustainability planning efforts.

The event will seek UM community input through presentations and small group discussions on what types of sustainability projects and key challenges the sustainability committee should address.

Speakers include Montevallo Mayor Hollie Cost, Physical Plant Director Billy Hughes, UAB’s Coordinator of Sustainability, Dr. Julie Price and more.

The afternoon will conclude with a summary of the event’s findings and a reception with light refreshments.

Lunch & Learn: Back To School
This month’s Staff Senate Lunch & Learn will be held Wednesday, March 8, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. followed by another session from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in the Wills Hall Master Classroom.

This month’s topic, Back to School, will discuss the preliminary steps and benefits available to employees who may be considering enrolling in classes or pursuing a degree at UM. Dessert will be provided.

If attending, bring your own lunch and RSVP to B.J. Posey with the specific session you plan to attend.

Donations Needed for Second Professional Clothing Drive
Throughout the month of March, the University will be accepting community donations for the second Professional Clothing Drive, hosted by the Offices of Partnerships and Outreach, Service Learning, the Career Development Center and Phi Chi Theta.

Donations will benefit UM students as they prepare for job interviews, internships and other business professional dress requirements.

The drive is requesting men’s ties, shirts, jackets, slacks, belts and shoes and women’s shirts, jackets, slacks, skirts, dresses and shoes. Donors can drop off items Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Global Community and Outreach Building (GLOCO) or schedule a pickup by emailing Kelli Holmes.

ValloCycle to Host March Night Ride
ValloCycle, the collaborative bike-sharing program between the city and University, is hosting a social night ride on Wednesday, March 8.

Riders are encouraged to decorate their bikes with lights for a night ride around the city. Everyone will meet at UMOM at 6:30 p.m., depart at 7 p.m. and ride five miles in 45 minutes, with the ride ending at Eclipse Coffee and Books.

If in need of a bike or helmet, contact ValloCycle.
