ValloVoice University of Montevallo
Home is Where the Bricks are
Homecoming is that exciting time in February for alumni from near and far to come home to Montevallo, reunite with former classmates and renew old friendships. This year, we are honoring the Classes of 1957, 1967, 1977, 1987, 1997 and 2007 along with our beloved Alabama College Society, Young Alumni, Minority Alumni and other affinity groups. For students, Homecoming is also the culmination of the Purple and Gold competition of College Night. Please join us for the festivities this week.
Bloch Party
As part of the Homecoming celebration, the Art Department invites the campus community to attend the 21st annual Alumni Art Auction and Bloch Party on Saturday, Feb. 11. The silent auction features affordable works of art in all media by alumni, current students and faculty members. The gallery is open for a preview on Friday, Feb. 10, and bidding starts on Saturday at 10 a.m. Food and refreshments are available at the Bloch Party beginning at 4 p.m. and concluding at 5:30 p.m. Winners may collect items at the conclusion of the event. All proceeds directly benefit art students with this year’s proceeds directed toward the Ted Metz Scholarship.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

Faculty members, Dr. Jason Newell and Jeannie Duke (also an alumna of UM) were recently featured on the PBS documentary “Ready to Help” along with alumnae Betty Glasscock and Joyce Greathouse. The documentary catalogs the history of social work in Alabama.

As the first social work educational program in Alabama, the University has trained social workers for nearly 92 years.

Student Achievements

Political Science major Molly Green and Spanish major Neal Van Marter were elected to the State Democratic Executive Committee. This committee is made up of one male and one female representative from each Alabama House District. Theses students were elected to represent District 73. They will attend meetings of the Alabama Democratic Party and vote on new bylaws and amendments that will affect the way the party is run in the state.
