Faculty/Staff Highlights

Dr. Erin Chandler and Dr. Heather Tinsley were recently presenters at AAC&U’s Creating a 21st Century General Education Conference in San Francisco. Their presentation titled “A New Approach to Interdisciplinarity in General Education Courses,” described a new course design developed with Dr. Andrea Eckelman. In this new course model, students enrolled in Dr. Chandler’s ENG 103, Dr. Tinsley’s BIO 100 and Dr. Eckelman’s POS 250 were brought together to collaborate on a shared learning experience involving the pollution crisis plaguing North Birmingham.

This collaborative course design introduced students to other disciplines and afforded them the opportunity to apply what they were learning in their respective classes to a complex, real world problem. Students also learned valuable lessons about communication and compromise. This project is also the topic of a chapter titled “The Role of Interdisciplinary Teaching in the Honors Curriculum: Insight from a Public Liberal Arts University” that was co-authored by Dr. Tinsley, Dr. Chandler and Dr. Eckelman as well as Honors Program director, Dr. Cathlena Martin. This chapter will be included in the book “Excellence, Innovation, and Ingenuity in Honors Education,” due out this spring.
