Former White House Chief of Staff to Speak at Fall Commencement

The speaker for fall commencement ceremonies will be Andrew H. Card Jr., the second longest tenured White House chief of staff. Card has served in senior government roles for three U.S. presidents.

Some his roles: deputy assistant to the president and director of intergovernmental affairs for President Ronald Reagan, deputy chief of staff and secretary of transportation for President George H.W. Bush and chief of staff for President George W. Bush. Read more about Card’s career accomplishments online.

Fall commencement will be held Friday, Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. in the McChesney Student Activity Center. A reception for graduates and their families hosted by the UM National Alumni Association will precede the ceremony at 4 p.m.

4th Annual E3 Event to Bring Elementary Engineers to Campus

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, the University will host the 4th annual Engaging Elementary Engineers (E3) event.

This year, 114 teams from 38 different schools and nine different school systems will compete in a variety of fun science and math-based challenges, including the construction of a space rover and space shelter and the annual egg drop challenge in the parking lot of Bibb Graves.

Bookstore Holds Faculty Appreciation Days

The Barnes & Noble campus bookstore is offering an extra 10 percent off for faculty and staff during Faculty Appreciation Days, Dec. 5 to Dec. 15.

The discount will be applied in addition to the standard 20 percent faculty/staff discount. Please bring your campus ID to receive the additional discount.

Faculty Highlight

Dr. Deborah Lowry, associate professor of sociology, wrote a chapter accepted for publication in “Otherhood: Feminist perspectives on voluntary and involuntary childlessness.” Out of more than 40 chapters received, only 16 were selected for inclusion in the final volume.
