Donations Needed for Annual Dress for Success Event

On March 16, UM will host Dress for Success, an annual event for students to shop for free donated business clothes and accessories in preparation for job interviews and other professional opportunities.

The event, now in its third iteration, is hosted by the UM office of Service Learning, the Career Development Center and Phi Chi Theta business fraternity.

UM is accepting donations from now until Monday, March 5. Needed items include men’s ties, shirts, jackets, slacks, belts and shoes and women’s shirts, jackets, slacks, skirts, dresses and shoes. The program is especially in need of women’s clothes size 10 and up.

Donors can drop off items Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Global Community and Outreach Building (GLOCO) at 845 Valley St. in Montevallo or schedule a pickup by emailing Dr. Amiee Mellon.

Nominations Requested for Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award

The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award recognizes students who exhibit exceptional humanitarian and spiritual qualities. Faculty and staff are encouraged to take a few minutes to nominate a deserving individual to receive this honor. Students graduating in December 2017 and May 2018 are eligible for consideration.

All nominations should be emailed to Dr. Tammi Dahle, vice president for enrollment and student affairs/dean of students by Friday, Feb. 2. The selection committee will then determine the award recipients, who will be announced during Honors Day ceremonies. Go online to read more info on the award.
 

UM Students Offer Free Income Tax Filing Assistance

The University of Montevallo Stephens College of Business is once again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The service allows low-to-moderate income citizens to have their taxes filed for free by certified student volunteers. This no-cost method also offers invaluable experience for student volunteers.

The VITA program is offered in Morgan Hall room 202 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Saturday beginning Feb. 10 until April 14. Those seeking to utilize the service are encouraged to make an appointment by calling 665-6531.

During each appointment, clients will need to bring a photo ID, social security number for each family member and working adult, W-2s and other income forms, childcare provider name, address, tax ID and bank routing and account numbers for checking and savings accounts.
 

Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow Hosting Zaxby’s Fundraiser for Student Emergency Fund

On Tuesday, Jan. 30, UM’s Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.) organization will host a fundraiser at the Zaxby’s in Alabaster on Highway 119. Between 6 to 9 p.m. that evening, Zaxby’s will donate 10 percent of all dine-in, carryout and drive thru sales to the Student Emergency Fund.

Additionally, S.T.A.T. will have a table set up in the restaurant for patrons to win a free t-shirt.
 

UM Volleyball Team Presenting Stand-Up Comedy Night at the SAC

The UM volleyball team will host a stand-up comedy night at the SAC on Monday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. Elisha Williams will serve as the opening act with Jermaine “Funny Maine” Johnson as the headliner. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by emailing assistant volleyball coach Jadranka Tramosljanin.
 

Montevallo Seeks Host Families for Sister City Students

The Montevallo Sister City Commission is looking for host families. Our friends from Echizen Town, Japan will be sending students to Montevallo March 16-24. If your family is interested in hosting a student, please email MontevalloSisterCity@gmail.com for more information and to receive an application.
 

Safe Zone Committee Hosting Spring Semester Training

The Safe Zone Committee will be hosting its spring semester training Jan. 30 at 3:30 p.m. in Morgan Hall room 101. Attendees can expect to learn more about Safe Zone and how to better support UM’s LGBT+ students. No RSVP is necessary to attend the event.
 

Birmingham Business Journal Offering Student Discount for Bizwomen Mentoring Monday

On Feb. 12, The Birmingham Business Journal will host its annual Mentoring Monday event. During the event, 41 women in the Birmingham community who are heavy hitters in their industry will mentor up-and-coming women. College students are encouraged to participate to determine their next steps and make contacts in the business world leading up to graduation.

To make the event more financially feasible for students, the publication is offering half off the admission price with the checkout code “STUDENT”. More information about the event can be found online.
 

Undergraduate Research Day Registration Deadline Approaching

Undergraduate Research Day 2018 is Wednesday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (the time may be adjusted slightly depending on the number of presentations). The award ceremony will be held from 3 to 4 p.m.

In order to participate in Undergraduate Research Day 2018, students must submit an electronic application by Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m.

The University of Montevallo’s Undergraduate Research Day is held each spring to highlight undergraduate student research.  It is open to all students who have completed an independent research or creative project in any discipline. Students participating in Undergraduate Research Day must have worked with a faculty mentor who will review the final product before it is presented.
 

Great Start Peer Mentors Needed

Great Start, UM’s year-long support program for alternatively admitted first-year students, is seeking undergraduate students interested in serving as peer mentors for the 2018-2019 Great Start class.

As a new edition to the program, peer mentors must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA, minimum of 24 earned hours as of the fall semester and a clear judicial record.

An application and a letter of recommendation by a faculty or staff member are required to participate. Both are due Feb. 21. Please share this with students that you feel would thrive in this sort of role. More info can be found online.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

Brook Pruitt, assistant professor of mass communication, has successfully completed Dante Certification Level 1 – advanced, technical training in routing and recording digital audio. Pruitt’s specialized knowledge in this area greatly increases the flexibility of Strong Hall.
 
The Winter Coat Drive hosted by the Office of Service Learning and the President’s Office concluded on Friday, Feb. 19. The drive managed to provide blankets and adult coats to Karen Pendleton for Shelby Emergency Assistance, children’s coats to Karen Furrow for Alabaster School District and extra coats, blankets and sweatshirts to Phil Cain of Family Connection.
