Construction Traffic Expected Feb. 25 around Morgan Hall

As part of the construction at Morgan Hall, Farmer Street will experience traffic that is heavier than usual on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 25. Between 7 and 9 a.m., Farmer Street will become a one-lane road from College Drive to Morgan Hall. There will be a 10- to 15-minute period within this timeframe in which the Farmer Street access from College Drive will be closed completely for the crane unloading of an HVAC unit. The street access will be reopened after unloading is complete. Please use caution and expect delays in this area.

Online Education at UM

UM’s online and hybrid course enrollments continue to increase. The Distance Education Advisory Committee is interested in hearing from students, staff and faculty who have questions, needs or insights related to distance education and its expansion at UM. Social Media Student Showcase

University Marketing & Communications is using social media to highlight current UM students who are doing amazing things in and out of the classroom. The goal is to show prospective students, alumni and other University stakeholders how extraordinary our students are. MarComm strives to always provide equal promotional representation of all colleges and departments across campus, so we are asking for your help in identifying students for our showcase pool. Please nominate students here. 

Applications Open for Enrollment in Child Study Center Pre-K

UM’s Child Study Center Pre-K program is now accepting applications for pre-registration for the 2020-2021 school year. The random drawing for acceptance will be held on March 20.

A copy of the child’s birth certificate and a recent utility bill must be uploaded or provided prior to the lottery drawing. Fees (tuition) for this program will be paid monthly during the school year and are based off a sliding income scale. We do not receive the sliding income scale until mid-summer.

Montevallo Arts Fest Seeking Student Artists

The Montevallo Arts Council is seeking students interested in showcasing their art at the upcoming Montevallo Arts Fest in Orr Park on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Artist applications are being taken through March 30, and are available on the Montevallo Arts Council’s Facebook page. For UM students, the application fee is $30, and the Arts Council has waived the booth fee.

During the event, approximately 80 artists will be set up in the park to display and sell their work ranging from fine arts to fine craft works.

BACHE Visiting Writers’ Series presents Ann Fisher-Wirth and Maude Schuyler Clay

Monday, Feb. 24, at 3:30 p.m., Pat Scales Special Collections Room, Carmichael Library

The BACHE Visiting Writers’ Series will host poet Ann Fisher-Wirth and photographer Maude Schuyler Clay in a discussion of their collaborative work.

Ann Fisher-Wirth is the author of six poetry collections, including “The Bones of Winter Birds,” “Mississippi” (with Maude Schuyler Clay) and “Dream Cabinet.” She is coeditor of “The Ecopoetry Anthology” and as professor of English at the University of Mississippi, she directs the university’s interdisciplinary minor in environmental studies and teaches yoga.

Maude Schuyler Clay was born and raised in the Mississippi Delta. She was photography editor of Oxford American from 1999-2004. Her work is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum for Women and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, among others. Her books include Delta land, Delta dogs and Mississippi history.

Guest Artists: Carlos Feller, Flute & Mary Chung, Piano

Monday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m., LeBaron Recital Hall, Davis Hall

Ouachita Baptist University music faculty members Dr. Mary Chung and Dr. Carlos Feller will present a Guest Artist Recital featuring music for flute and piano. Chung and Feller have performed together extensively as a duo both nationally and internationally since they met in the mid-2000s, including Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, France, Honduras, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Switzerland.

Emerita Faculty Recital: Cynthia MacCrae, Piano

Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m., LeBaron Recital Hall, Davis Hall

During this performance audience members will be invited to consider specific thoughts, emotions and moods that might be linked to each piece. Program selections will range from the hectic pace that most of us experience daily to pieces that invite relaxation, reflection, visualization and empowerment.

Montevallo Astronomical Society and UM Astronomy Club Meeting

Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., James Wylie Shepherd Observatory

All visitors are welcome for an evening of celestial observing and good company. Spring observing dates are scheduled for Feb. 26, March 11, March 18, March 25, April 15 and April 22. All dates are 7:30 to 9 p.m., and will be held provided it is not raining or overcast.

For those with GPS navigation systems, the physical address of the JWSO is 1093 Pebble Road, Montevallo, 35115. The gates will be open. (Ignore the No Trespassing signs). Directions to the JWSO: Following 119 South through Montevallo, turn right onto 10 West (Middle Street) for 1 mile, bearing right onto 17 North. After 0.3 miles, turn left onto 206 West, and after 0.4 miles, turn right onto Pebble Road, continuing 0.7 miles to the UM Gentry Springs property.

One of Shakespeare’s most beloved classics comes to life in this fast-paced, zany and comical production. Set on the rooftop bar of The Globe restaurant in modern-day NYC, misplaced affections mix with mischievous spells as four young lovers and an unsuspecting troupe of aspirational actors cross paths with the fairy king and queen. ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ dives in headfirst, creating a playful piece filled with music, dance and a contemporary twist. Twelve actors take on multiple roles as the lines between worlds, characters, reality and audience begin to blur.

March Professional Photo Days

University Marketing & Communications is pleased to offer Professional Photo Days. Each month, the digital marketing manager will have two designated mornings available for professional headshots. Spring Preview Day

Saturday, March 7, at 8:30 a.m., McChesney Student Activity Center

The University of Montevallo invites prospective students and their families to attend Spring Preview Day on Saturday, March 7. Activities for the day begin at the McChesney Student Activity Center at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 1 p.m. Preview Day gives high school and transfer students a close-up look at the Montevallo experience. More information can be found online.

ACT Prep Course

Saturday, March 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wills Hall

The University of Montevallo will host a single-day ACT prep course for local high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The $110 single-day course covers all ACT test subjects with in-class practice testing and includes lunch and a snack. Each participant will also receive a copy of the official ACT prep book, a math review card and other resources. Children of UM employees and students receiving free and reduced lunch get a 20 percent discount. Student Highlights

Kendall Criswell, a senior political science major, has been awarded the 2020 Siegler Fellowship from the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center. Criswell currently studies the Holocaust with Dr. Clark Hultquist, professor of history. The Siegler Fellowship was created in 2017 in honor of Holocaust survivor Ruth Siegler’s 90th birthday. Her children and grandchildren worked with the BHEC to create this paid summer research fellowship opportunity for a graduate or post-graduate student to ensure that the stories of Holocaust survivors would be preserved for future generations.
