Exemplary Faculty and Staff Honored During 122nd Founders’ Day

On Oct. 11, the University of Montevallo community gathered to celebrate 122 years as an institution of higher learning. During the annual convocation in Palmer Hall, several UM faculty and staff members were honored for their hard work and dedication to the University.

Each spring, the University recognizes one faculty member who has shown exemplary strides in creativity, research and scholarship as the University Scholar. This year, Dr. Jason Newell, professor and director of the social work program, was formally honored with that distinction.

The University’s National Alumni Association presented three awards during the Founders’ Day ceremony. Dr. John Herron, associate professor of mathematics, received the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award, Mary Horton received the Outstanding Staff Service Award and Mike Meadows ’79 received the Mary Lou Elder Williams Alumnus Loyalty Award.

Dr. Dan Valentine, president of the faculty senate presented this year’s Faculty Service Award to Carey Heatherly, associate professor and archive & special collections librarian.

Chirayu Madhu Shah, adjunct instructor in the Stephens College of Business, then received the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award presented by Dr. Jim McDonald.
