Exemplary Faculty and Staff Honored During 121st Founders’ Day

On Oct. 12, the University of Montevallo community gathered to celebrate 121 years as an institution of higher learning. During the annual convocation in Palmer Hall, several UM faculty and staff members were honored for their hard work and dedication to the University.

Each spring, the University recognizes one faculty member who has shown exemplary strides in creativity, research and scholarship as the University Scholar. This year, Dr. John Bawden, associate professor of history, was formally honored with that distinction.

The University’s National Alumni Association presented three awards during the Founders’ Day ceremony. Dr. Sherry Ford, professor of communication, received the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award, Ms. Tonja Battle received the Outstanding Staff Service Award and Mike Grainger ’73 received the Mary Lou Elder Williams Alumnus Loyalty Award.

Dr. Jim McDonald, University provost, presented the annual awards from the Office of Academic Affairs. Dr. Deb Lowry, assistant professor of social work, received the Academic Advising Award and Dr. Mary Ann Gray, adjunct instructor of teaching, leadership and technology, received the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award.

This year’s Faculty Service Award presented by Faculty Senate President, Dr. Jennifer Ray, went to Dr. Houston Byrd, chair of the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
