122nd Founders’ Day Set for Thursday

Join us on Thursday at 11 a.m. in Palmer Auditorium for the 122nd Founders’ Day. This year’s theme will focus on the connections that form through our traditions and friendships while at the University of Montevallo. These traditions reflect our ideals, our priorities and our sense of belonging to create connections that begin on these bricks, but reach far beyond these gates.

One of these traditions is College Night, which officially begins its Centennial Celebration on Oct.13. As a tribute to this milestone, Convocation guests will enjoy a presentation from the cast of the Early Years Dinner.

Alumni Willie Phillips ’00 and Amos Snead ’02 will deliver the keynote address. Together, Phillips and Snead serve as an excellent example of the connections made on UM’s brick streets. Becoming friends in college has led the two to help other UM alumni succeed by building networking opportunities in the D.C. area.

Another highlight of the ceremony is the Investiture of the Senior Class into the Community of Scholars. Seniors will officially don their robes for the first time to signify achieving this rank.

Following the ceremony, lunch will be served in the cafeteria with seating throughout Anna Irvin Dining Hall. All participants, guests and family members are invited. The Founders’ Day Committee will also have a special gift at the dining hall as a memento of the University’s 122nd year.

21st annual Life Raft Debate

The 21st annual Life Raft Debate, sponsored by the Philosophy Club, will be held on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium.
The panelists will be:

  • Dr. Courtney Bentley — Curriculum and Teaching
  • Dr. Alex Beringer — English
  • Emily Gill — Theatre
  • Laura McMillian — Art
  • Dr. Scott Turner — Political Science
  • Emcee — Dr. Scott Varagona (not eligible for votes this time!)

Since its inception in 1998 by Dr. Michael Patton, several universities including University of Buffalo, the College of William and Mary, University of Arkansas and University College Dublin have followed the idea and started their own annual life raft debates. UM’s Life Raft Debate was even featured on NPR’s This American Life in 2010. NPR recently re-aired the episode. (Life Raft Debate is featured in Act 2).

Student Highlights

Congratulations to River Dolan ’19 and Geordie Kennedy ’19 on finding the Crook! This year, the first clue was “Montevallo’s traditions bind us together. It's a place where connections will always dwell.” Dolan and Kennedy found the Crook hidden next to the College Night storage buildings. The two will be recognized at the Founders’ Day Convocation.
