21st annual Life Raft Debate
The 21st annual Life Raft Debate, sponsored by the Philosophy Club, will be held on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium.
The panelists will be:
- Dr. Courtney Bentley — Curriculum and Teaching
- Dr. Alex Beringer — English
- Emily Gill — Theatre
- Laura McMillian — Art
- Dr. Scott Turner — Political Science
- Emcee — Dr. Scott Varagona (not eligible for votes this time!)
Since its inception in 1998 by Dr. Michael Patton, several universities including University of Buffalo, the College of William and Mary, University of Arkansas and University College Dublin have followed the idea and started their own annual life raft debates. UM’s Life Raft Debate was even featured on NPR’s This American Life in 2010. NPR recently re-aired the episode. (Life Raft Debate is featured in Act 2).
College Night Centennial Celebration
The Centennial Celebration of College Night will begin on Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. with College Night: The Early Years dinner and tribute to the founding of College Night through the 1940s. Tickets are on sale now at $50 per guest and seating is limited. All proceeds benefit the College Night Endowment Fund.
Following the dinner, the College Night Centennial Celebration Revue, An Evening to Remember, will present a theatrical portrayal of the last 70 years of College Night productions. Tickets are on sale now to alumni, faculty and staff for $20 per ticket. They will remain on sale until sold out or until the event. Foreign Language Film Series presents En la palma de tu mano
The Fall 2018 Foreign Language Film Series continues on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. in Comer Auditorium with the 1951 classic, “En la palma de tu mano” (In the Palm of Your Hand).
Lunch & Learn: Being Financially Fit
Please join the Staff Senate on Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Wills 200 for the monthly Lunch & Learn series. This month’s topic is Being Financially Fit presented by Kathy Adams. Dedication of Georgine Lemak Soccer Field
The University of Montevallo will dedicate the Georgine Lemak Soccer Field, formerly known as Varsity Field, in honor of Georgine Lemak and the family’s commitment, for more than 20 years, to student-athletes at the University of Montevallo. The ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. prior to the men’s soccer game against Clayton State University on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Food and drinks will be served. All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.
UM Office Location Changes
A number of UM offices have moved, or will soon move, to new locations on campus. Please make a note of these changes as you plan your visits to these departments:
- Undergraduate Admissions is now located in Reynolds Hall.
- Student Aid is now on the first floor of Palmer Hall.
- University Relations is now in Peterson House.
- University Accounting will relocate to the second floor of Palmer Hall in the coming weeks.
Annual Open Enrollment for UM Benefits
The open enrollment period for University of Montevallo benefits is Monday, Oct. 1 through Friday, Oct. 19. Eligible UM faculty and staff can re-evaluate their needs and make changes to benefit selections for calendar year 2019.
Please note that all employees are required to fill out an open enrollment form to waive coverage, continue coverage and/or elect coverage.

Campus Dining Services Fall Survey
Chartwells will be running the dining services survey throughout the month of October. The survey can be taken at any time by students, faculty or staff online.
The survey takes just a few minutes to complete and will help improve the dining services on campus. To access the survey, students can use the Dine On Campus site or simply go straight to the survey.
13th Annual Run for Research
Make plans to participate in the 13th Annual Run for Research 5-K Run and 1-mile Walk to be held Thursday, Nov. 1. Registration begins at 3 p.m. at the McChesney Student Activity Center parking lot and the race will begin promptly at 3:45 p.m. Please note that in the event of inclement weather, registration will take place inside the SAC.
Entry fee is $10 for faculty, staff and community members. Register now for the Run with Tonja Battle in Hill House. Free t-shirt for first 75 registrants! Participants will receive an email when t-shirts are ready to pick up.
Poarch Creek Archivist to Visit Campus
Faculty, please meet Dr. Deidra Suwanee Dees, archivist of the Poarch Creek Nation, to explore how you or your students might collaborate with the Poarch Creek Archives. Stop by the reception at Hill House on Tuesday, Oct. 30 between 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Faculty, staff, students and community members: hear Dr. Deidra Suwanee Dees, archivist of the Poarch Creek Nation, discuss the current digitization project preserving artifacts related to the tribe’s successful efforts to gain federal recognition on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2-3 p.m. in Comer Auditorium.
