Environmental Studies Program to Host Book Talk with Lee Rozelle
On Monday, Jan. 30, Dr. Lee Rozelle, associate professor of English, will offer a talk on his latest book, “Zombiescapes & Phantom Zones: Ecocriticism and the Liminal from ‘Invisible Man’ to ‘The Walking Dead’” in Carmichael Library’s J.A. Brown Room from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Rozelle’s book explores ravaged literary landscapes and how their utter desolation could hint at brighter, greener futures. Refreshments will be provided by Eclipse Coffee and Books.
UM Students Present at United Way Annual Meeting
A social media campaign created by five UM students was recently announced as the winner of United Way’s inaugural Social Media Challenge. Today, a handful of those students, along with faculty mentors Dr. Amiee Mellon and Dr. Tiffany Wang, are presenting their successful campaign to top non-profit executives and leaders during United Way’s annual meeting. Malone Center Requests Feedback on Faculty Instructional Technology Survey
The Malone Center is asking UM faculty to complete its Spring 2017 Instructional Technology survey. The survey results will provide the center with a better understanding of faculty usage, perception and needs for instructional technology and online teaching. Results will be later shared with various campus entities for planning future technology purchases and support decisions. All responses are due by Feb. 3.

UM Seeks Representatives at COPLAC’s Undergraduate Research Conference
Each year, the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) hosts an undergraduate research conference during the spring semester. The event allows undergrad students to network and gain experience by presenting their research in front of peers from across the country. This year’s event will be held at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise on April 21 and 22.

Faculty mentors are urged to encourage their students involved in Undergraduate Research Day to consider participating. Each student must submit an application with a faculty mentor endorsement and a detailed outline of the presentation to by Feb. 15.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

On Jan. 6, University Archivist Carey Heatherly participated in a panel session during the American Historical Association’s annual meeting in Denver, Colorado. Heatherly and University of South Carolina Aiken’s Deborah Tritt discussed their experiences teaching “Voices of Industrial America,” a course which involved their students telling the stories of the Second Industrial Revolution in their communities through digital projects.

University Happenings

Upcoming University Summer Festivities
This summer, UM will host an exciting new festival and camp.

The inaugural Montevallo Yoga Festival will take place on May 20. This day-long festival will be the first of its kind in Alabama. MoYo is designed to attract those interested in yoga, nature, healthy living, wellness, fitness, natural healing, meditation and mind and body connections.

The College of Fine Arts’ Department of Theatre will host the Alabama High School Theatre Camp from June 11 to 16. This state-wide residential camp will provide a process-focused approach, engaging several aspects of theatre study to train young high school actors of all levels.

Anyone interested is encouraged to register quickly before all available spaces are filled.
