Wallace State-Hanceville Joins ContinuUM Program

The University and Wallace State Community College-Hanceville have announced a partnership to offer students easy transition from the community college to the four-year public university. The formalized program, ContinuUM, offers Wallace State students guaranteed admission to UM and eligibility for scholarships after earning an associate’s degree or 45 transferable credit hours.

Foreign Language Film Series Continues

The Foreign Language Film Series continues on Wednesday, March 20, at 5 p.m. in Comer Auditorium with the 1954 Mexican film “Abismos de pasion” (The Depths of Passion, based on Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights).

Safe Zone Bake Sale

UM Safe Zone is hosting a Spring Break Bake Sale on Thursday, March 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Farmer Hall patio. Stop by and grab some snacks to benefit the Safe Zone Student Emergency Fund. Faculty/Staff Highlights

Brook Pruitt’s “Essie” is an official selection to the International Christian Film and Music Festival in Orlando, Florida.
Dr. Jennifer Rickel, associate professor of English, presented a paper titled “Adichie in Alabama: Lessons in Rights, Gender Inequality, and Racial Injustice” at the 28th annual British Commonwealth and Postcolonial Studies Conference in Savannah, Georgia, in February 2019.

Dr. Roderick George, professor of music, was a featured guest artist in a concert titled “The Langston Cycles: A Musical Celebration of the Poetry of Langston Hughes” for the School of Music and Theatre at Heidelberg University in Ohio, on Friday, March 15. George performed “Langston’s Lot,” a song-cycle of seven settings for tenor voice. Composition for the concert was written by Dr. Doug McConnell, professor of composition and music theory at Heidelberg University. George was accompanied by Dr. Jackie Edwards Henry, professor of piano at Mississippi State University, and Dr. Gail B. Levinsky, saxophonist and associate professor of music at Susquehanna University.

Student Highlight

Michaela Parker, junior vocal performance major, was awarded second place in the vocal division of the Birmingham Music Club Guild Scholarship Competition held on Saturday, March 9, at Birmingham Southern College. Parker studies voice with Dr. Roderick George.
