Falcon Forward: An Overview of Fall Opening

We are looking forward to welcoming you back to campus in the coming months. With all of the uncertainty surrounding the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, I want to take this opportunity to update you on our plans for the fall semester.

The amount of dedication and resiliency shown by everyone at Montevallo over the past few months is inspiring and we have all navigated this unprecedented situation together. I would like to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly to help the University manage these trying times and develop a plan to continue to deliver a world-class education while ensuring the health and safety of everyone on campus.

UM administration has formed the Roadmap to Fall Opening Task Force. This very capable group developed the Falcon Forward plan to guide the University as it prepares for the upcoming semester. The task force used guidelines provided by the American College Health Association couched in a framework developed by Johns Hopkins University to establish a plan for critical areas. In addition, the task force developed a communication plan with educational and training resources for the campus community in order to prepare all constituents for fall opening. We drew from federal, state, local and professional resources to develop this plan.

I would like to thank Dr. Tammi Dahle, Dean of Students and Vice President of Enrollment and Student Affairs, for her thoughtful leadership and industry as chair of the task force and for leading the development of the Falcon Forward plan.

The University of Montevallo has long held a reputation as one of the safest college campuses in Alabama. The health and safety of everyone on campus is paramount and UM is planning to enhance cleaning efforts, utilize personal protective equipment and potentially modify traditional classroom settings, among other steps. These measures are detailed in this document, which serves as an overview of a larger plan and outlines Montevallo’s commitment to safety as it prepares for the fall.

UM Swimming Selected as Scholar All-America Team

In their inaugural year, the UM swim team continues to add to a list of accomplishments that have been achieved in a relatively short amount of time. The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America has bestowed Scholar All-American honors upon the University of Montevallo men’s and women’s swimming teams.

CSCAA Executive Director Greg Earhart spoke about the effort put forth by head coach Aaron Mahaney, “No team was unaffected by this spring’s pandemic but Athletic Director Mark Richard and Provost Dr. Mary Beth Armstrong can and should be proud of their team and the work of Aaron.”

Teams were selected for this honor on the basis of their spring GPAs and represent 17,982 student-athletes. Montevallo is one out of 461 schools to receive the award for the spring semester. Montevallo is one of nine teams who will be receiving the honors for the very first time.

“I am very proud of the swim teams and Coach Mahaney for all of their accomplishments during their inaugural year.” Richard said. “They have upheld our standards of excellence not only in athletics but more importantly in the classroom.”

Student Highlights

UM student Claudia Bonney Amamoo has been awarded a Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship by the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First-Year Success. Selection for the scholarship is based on academic records, maintaining a 3.5 GPA, participation in Alpha Lambda Delta activities, campus and community service activities and the applicant’s essay answers. Bonney Amamoo is a political science and foreign language major with a Spanish concentration, is an active member of Montevallo’s Alpha Lambda Delta chapter, the Student Government Association’s international senator and secretary of the Environmental Club.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced recently that 4,016 student-athletes have earned GEICO Academic All-GLVC distinction for the 2019-2020 season. The GEICO Academic All-GLVC honor is awarded to student-athletes who meet a cumulative GPA of 3.30 over two semesters of an academic year at the institution. The UM men’s lacrosse team placed 13 student-athletes on the list for their hard work in the classroom.

In addition to the GEICO Academic All-GLVC honors, the conference has recognized 554 student-athletes who have earned the GLVC Brother James Gaffney FSC Distinguished Scholar Award. Among those receiving the honors were three of Montevallo men’s lacrosse student-athletes. Sophomore faceoff specialist Brendan Miklos, sophomore midfielder Jackson Neufeld and junior midfielder Kordell Primus were among those honored for their academic achievements by the GLVC.
