Cummings to Speak at Commencement

Alumnus Dr. Richard D. Cummings ’74, world-renowned researcher, will deliver the keynote address for Spring Commencement, Saturday, May 4, at 9 a.m. at Flowerhill. A reception for graduates and their families hosted by the UM National Alumni Association will precede the ceremony at 7:30 a.m.

Cummings currently works as the S. Daniel Abraham Professor of Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He is also the director of the Harvard Medical School Center for Glycoscience.

Cummings was selected as the 2019 Distinguished Alumnus in February and last week, he was recognized by the Alabama State Legislature with a proclamation noting his research accomplishments. Learn more about Cummings

Senior Day Lunch, May 3

On Friday, May 3, the Office of Advancement will host a fundraiser lunch on Flowerhill prior to graduation rehearsal. Between 2 and 4 p.m., faculty, staff and the senior class are encouraged to come out and make a minimum $5 donation for a Chick-fil-A lunch, dessert from Sno-Biz and an alumni t-shirt.

Contributions will benefit the senior class project. Please RSVP to Jacob Gordon by Wednesday, May 1.

Cradle to Career Action Summit

The Cradle to Career Action Summit has been scheduled for April 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Barn at the American Village. All Montevallo community members, parents, educators, youth and business owners are invited to the summit to identify and plan next steps for projects that invest in Montevallo families, schools and the broader community.

The summit is a culmination of the “Cradle to Career” forum series which began in Montevallo in August of 2018. Discussion and action planning will be based upon feedback received from the community during the forums. However, no previous participation in the forum series is required. Reserve your spot.

Spring Soirée, May 10

Join the Junior Alumni Board on Friday, May 10, at 6 p.m. for the 11th annual Spring Soirée and Silent Auction! With the success of last year, this event will again be held at the Hoover Randle Home & Gardens. Enjoy appetizers, two free drinks per person and some great fun with all your fellow Montevallo friends, while you bid on auction items. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the University of Montevallo Young Alumni Scholarship. This event is free for University of Montevallo faculty, staff, alumni and friends. Young Musicians’ Camp Registration

Young Musicians’ Camp is a week-long camp for young musicians providing excellent musical training, fun evening events and a chance to meet others from all over the state of Alabama and across the Southeast. The camp will be held June 9-14. The scholarship registration deadline is Friday, May 3, and the general registration deadline is Friday, May 10. May is National Military Appreciation Month

National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) is celebrated every May and is a declaration that encourages U.S. citizens to observe the month in a symbol of unity. NMAM honors the current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those who have died in the pursuit of freedom. The Office of Veteran and Military Affairs encourages you to do something special this month for those who are serving or have served our country in the military.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

Tiffany R. Bunt has accepted the role of director of alumni affairs. Bunt has worked in various roles within University Marketing & Communications, most recently as communications manager and editor of the alumni magazine, “Montevallo Today.” During her 13 years with the University, Bunt has served on many committees and played an active role in volunteering with alumni and community events. She has an extensive knowledge of all things Montevallo and has cultivated many relationships with UM alumni.
Mass Communication faculty, Dr. Jay Cofield and Brook Pruitt, along with MC students Jybria Robinson, Kendall Messer, Matt Renna and Kelly Garrett, served as judges for the Digital Cinema Production and Television (Video) Production Categories at the Alabama SkillsUSA State Championships on April 16. High school teams from across the state of Alabama competed to create videos on-site that showcased the value of education and career readiness.
Dr. Eun-Hee Park, assistant professor of music, adjudicated Alabama Music Teachers Association’s District piano auditions in Auburn, April 6, and in Huntsville, April 13. She also conducted a masterclass for a group of piano students at the Montgomery School of Music on April 26.
Dr. Gregory Samuels, assistant professor of secondary education, has been named UM’s 2019-2020 University Scholar. Samuels’ work was praised for its inclusivity, its commitment to social justice and its real-life applications for the good of our students and those from the entire metro area. Overall, his work is a pattern of achievement that happily marries scholarship with service, and is destined to bring many area students to Montevallo. As University Scholar, Samuels will be recognized at Founders’ Day next fall, will receive a cash award and will make a public presentation of his work for the UM community.
