Hon. Todd Strange ’66 to Speak at Fall Commencement

University of Montevallo Board of Trustees Chairman Todd Strange will deliver the keynote address and will receive an honorary doctorate degree at the University’s fall commencement at the McChesney Student Activity Center Friday, Dec. 13, at 5 p.m.

Strange graduated from UM in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, and served as the mayor of Montgomery for more than 10 years until his recent retirement.

UM Post Office Holiday Hours

With the holiday break approaching, please note that UM Post Office services will be as follows:

UM Post Office in Farmer Hall will close Monday, Dec. 16, at 5 p.m.

Farmer Hall and the UM Post Office will open Thursday, Dec. 26, from noon until 5 p.m. for access to UM Post Office boxes. The UM Post Office window/counter will be open between noon and 1 p.m. If you are expecting large amounts of mail or have outgoing mail, this will be the time to pick up mail or drop off outgoing mail.

UPS, FedEx and other special carriers will not run to campus over the break. All packages will be held at their facilities until Jan. 2, 2020.

Falcons Soar Higher in Latest D2 Regional Poll

Off the heels of a 22-point victory last week, the University of Montevallo women’s basketball team moved up into the top five in the week’s D2SIDA Regional poll. Read more.

 

Falcons Fighting Cancer T-Shirts Available

UM Athletics is still selling Falcons Fighting Cancer T-shirts. These long sleeve shirts make great stocking stuffers and the proceeds will stay in the local area to support breast cancer research and awareness. $15 for sizes S-XL, $20 for XXL and XXXL. Cash or check only. Visit the Athletics Department in the SAC to purchase your shirts.

 

Falcon Food Pantry Donations Welcome

UM Counseling Services invites you to support the Falcon Food Pantry now through Dec. 13 in Farmer Hall. What do you need to do to support?

  1. Look for the tree next to our shopping cart.
  2. Select an ornament off the tree.
  3. Purchase the non-perishable item listed on your ornament. The quantity is up to you.
  4. Bring your donation and ornament to Counseling Services by Friday, Dec. 13.

Counseling Services is located in the lower part of Main Hall. Call 205-665-6245 if additional information is needed. All donations benefit UM students.
 

Student Dietetic Association Survey Opportunity 

On behalf of the Student Dietetic Association (SDA), we request your participation in a survey related to food insecurity among students at the University of Montevallo. The survey is part of the organization’s research project this year, and the results will inform future projects for the SDA.

Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary and you may opt out of any question in the survey. All of your responses will be kept confidential. They will only be used for statistical purposes and will be reported only in aggregated form. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. To participate, please visit this link. If you complete the questionnaire, you may enter a drawing to win a $100 Amazon gift card.

Cereal Night is Back

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday during finals week, at 8 p.m., in Carmichael Library

Carmichael Library will be offering free cereal, along with extended hours, during finals week! Enjoy free cereal and coffee on the first floor of the library, and stay overnight to study for finals. While you’re there, stop by the Circulation Desk or the Welcome Desk for free scantrons (limit 2 per student per day). GOOD LUCK ON YOUR FINALS!


De-Stress Fest

Military-Related Students Invited to Recharge for Finals

Monday, Dec. 9, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Vet Center (GLOCO Building)

Blue Planet: Water, Survival and Artistic Expression

Opening reception Monday, Dec. 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., on the lower level of Carmichael Library.

Come see photography/mixed media work by students in this interdisciplinary course (ART, ES and HNRS). In Blue Planet, students examine the role of water in human history/culture/biology, explore water sustainability challenges and use artistic expression to advocate for a healthier relationship between humans and the water they depend on for life. Refreshments provided.

 

Sound Meditation for Stress Management

Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 5 to 6 p.m., in Bibb Graves Dance Studio

The Montevallo Yoga Festival is excited to host Jessica Carmen on campus for a special event: Sound Meditation for Stress Management. Allow an hour to get still and let the end of semester stress melt away. You will be guided into meditation and then experience the soothing tones of Himalayan Sound Bowls. These bowls are tuned to balance the chakras offering deep relaxation and energetic alignment. Participants are encouraged to sit or lie down in a comfortable position while in meditation. No experience necessary to enjoy the full benefits. We have some yoga mats and feel free to bring a small blanket and/or pillow and wear comfortable clothes. ValloCycle Glow Ride — Finals Edition

Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 5:30 p.m., in front of UMOM

Join ValloCycle for our final glow ride of the year, a great way to de-stress during final exams. We’ll enjoy a leisurely, 45-minute, 5-mile night ride around Montevallo. Our journey takes us through the town and off the main roads (no one is left behind). We ride after dark, so decorate your bike with lights. If you need to borrow a free bike, email vallocycle@gmail.com. Please plan to meet in front of UMOM (University of Montevallo on Main Street) at 5:30 p.m. We will ride at 6 p.m. and end at a surprise location with snacks provided!

 

Pack the SAC

Monday, Jan. 6, 2020 at 5:30 p.m., in Trustmark Arena

Join UM Athletics to Pack the SAC as the Falcons take on West Florida. Free T-shirts to the first 500 fans in attendance. Women’s game starts at 5:30 p.m. and men’s game starts at 7:30 p.m.
