Closing Words:

I have a book that is titled, "Fascinating Facts of the Faith".  In some ways it reminds me of the stories that Paul Harvey would share on his radio program, "The Rest of the Story".  Here is one of the stories from the book:

Though blinded at six weeks of age through improper medical treatment, Fanny Crosby was never bitter about her condition.  in 1844, at eight years of age, she wrote her first book of poetry entitled, A Blind Girl and Other Poems.

Before her death at age ninety-five, Crosby wrote more than eight thousand gospel songs.  the words to one of her most beloved hymns, "Blessed Assurance" has been used in in evangelical worship for the past century and is also inscribed on her headstone.

Crosby told the story about a gentleman  she met while at a meeting in Exeter Hall, London in 1890.  He described a scene he witnessed during the recent war with Transvaal.  When the soldiers going to the front would pass another group of soldiers they recognized, they would greet them with the statement, "Four-nine-four, boys; four-nine-four."  The other group of soldiers would answer with the phrase, "Six further on, boys; six further on".  It happened that small editions of the book Sacred Songs and Solos had been given to the troops.  Number 494 was the hymn "God Be with You Till We Meet Again," and number 500 (six further on in the hymnal) was "Blessed Assurance".

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine;
Of what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchased of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Saviour, all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Saviour, all the day long.

For me the rest of the story regarding "Blessed Assurance" is knowing that it was one of my grandmother's favourite hymns and part of her heritage that she passed on to me.

Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.  Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.-Hebrews 10:22,23

Have a great day!
Pastor Moe
