The beauty of Spring and the promise of vaccines and the Great Reset are a motivating force for this month of May. Today, I was so excited to begin running again, now that the snow has melted. I got my running clothes on, put on my running shoes, and got my water bottle filled. I drove to my favorite running path that I hadn’t run since last Fall. I began running, looking at my watch to see what time it was to calculate my pace. But five minutes into my run, I saw that the muddy mountain road was blocked by logs piled up across the road. There was no getting around them.
So, I ran back to a path that is at the beginning of the road, a path I had never taken. I decided I would see where it would take me. As it was new terrain, I had to be more careful of the rocks and tree roots. And not knowing what to expect, I had to be more careful. I also needed to pay attention to follow the path and not go off in a direction that would take me to a dead end. I ran for around 50 minutes, thinking how different it is to run on a path you don’t know and don’t feel like you have sure footing on. I realized that life is often like my run. You get ready to take the expected pathway, and unexpectedly you arrive at a place where it gets blocked. But ultimately there are other pathways to discover. They just take more energy and concentration to navigate.
This last year we have all found ourselves blocked by some form of obstacle during lockdowns that have created major detours on our familiar roads. But this Spring holds the promise of finding new ways to keep going forward.
