Message from . . .

Advertising, Media & Events Co-ordinator

Greetings to you all, Members & Friends,

It was another busy evening down at the Club on Friday night especially after all the Business Day Bowls fun in the afternoon. We had fantastic music for the evening as well with Craig Jack Lewis on stage, as well as our lovely Lesley Lancaster who joined in every now and then. Some of us also caught a glimpse and heard Kevin Lancaster on the guitar as well . . . which was by the way fabulous!! I managed to capture some very special pics below.

Many thanks to all of you who came down and supported the Lucky Draw's and also the Club Members Draw as well. Sadly no winner for the Club Members Draw this week which was lost to Gillian Thiele . . . (and the crowd all sighed and went Aaaaaaahhhh!!!!!)  This Friday R600 so don't miss it!!  Thanks to Gordon Dickson for being the host of the prizes for the evening.

Please all remember to tell your friends that any patron that supports our Club on a Friday night can enter into our Bar Lucky Draws and can win so please invite your family and friends to join us!! Visitors are most welcome at our Club . . .

PLEASE NOTE - You have to be present at the Club to win these prizes if your name is drawn!!

If there is anyone out there that would like to contribute towards our Lucky Draw prizes for Friday night and sponsor a prize please could you contact me.  Our Friday evenings are festive and we do get lots of support from the Members and also the local community so any additional prizes would be great to add to the fun!!

I also advertise and promote your business as well in recognition of your contribution towards the prize evening, so it is well worth it to be a part of our Friday evening Fun!!

Winners of last Friday's Lucky Draws were . . .

Winner of the R100 Meal Voucher this week from Schooners Restaurant was (and just look at that face!!!) Gordon Dickson

The Rugby Report supplied by Denis Venter from Kidz Mini Mag.

Are We Building or Just Falling Apart……

I am sure I am not the only one wondering what’s going on the Sharks Rugby these days….. For me it would seem that the standard and commitment that we grew to love in the teams of the ‘90’s and early part of this century has been lost. Apart of the odd moment of brilliance and a wee bit of luck, all we normally see is a bunch of guys pitching up and going through the motions.

Last Saturday against the old foe from up north the Golden Lions was no different …… our scrum which was always one of our strong points was totally demolished….In the 61st min the Sharks scored a nice try and converted it to put them in the lead, 10-16. Then promptly gave up and let the Lions run in 3 converted tries in the last 15 min of the game, with the game ending in the Lions favor at 31-16.

The worrying part is our esteemed “Director of Rugby” Mr Gold does not seem too concerned about the quality of rugby being played.

This is how Mr Gold examined giving away 3 tries in the dying moments of the game. “I don’t think we were under pressure, it was just a case of cracks opening, and we made stupid errors. Maybe I should possibly not have made substitutions in terms of ‘it was not broken so why fix it.’ It was just silly errors that led to their tries.”
Am I the only one worried ??……..

Sharks: Try: Odwa Ndungane, Conversion: Joe Pietersen, Penalties: Pietersen (3)
Golden Lions: Tries: Howard Mnisi, Stokkies Hanekom, Courtnall Skosan, Anthony Volmink
Conversions: Marnitz Boshoff (4), Penalty: Ruan Combrinck
This weekend our boys are away in Port Elizabeth…… Let’s see how it’s a better outing for us.
Saturday 29th August – 17:05
Sharks vs EP Kings
Nelson MANDELA Bay Stadium
We are Black…..We are White….. We are Dynamite…..

There was good support down at the Club on Saturday afternoon where loyal locals & members "pulled in" to show their support for the Sharks. Sadly the Sharks lost the game to the Lions, but the vibe and party atmosphere was truly electric especially at the end of the game when the intense pressure of the game was on "in those dying moments"!!

Thanks to all of you who supported our Club for the Rugby on Saturday, and also well done to those of you that wore your Sharks Shirts as well!! Wow so much of support . . .

There were lots of bids and lots of interest shown . . .

And the final hand went up @ R1000 and SOLD to Howard Frizelle!!!!

Seen below Mervin Curnow handing over the wine to the winner Howard Frizelle!!

Thank you Howard . . . such a fabulous start to our fundraising project for the B Green at the Bowling Club.

A bit of History . . .

The first 9 hole golf course in Port Shepstone was laid out in 1912, situated between the present site of the Dutch Reformed Church and Port Shepstone High School with the southern boundary being the Umbango River. The greens were sand in those days.  Also in 1912, on the present site of the PSCC golf course, a corrugated iron pavilion was built to house tables, chairs and tools for use for the Gymkanas and Athletics school sport which were held there.

Then in 1918 the Lower Umzimkulu Lawn Tennis Club was moved from Batstons Drift to this site and the pavilion was used for storing tennis equipment. During 1928 the president of the Tennis Club, Mr Neil McKenzie and the committee decided to engage Syd Brews to design a 9 hole golf course and the present site. Mr McKenzie with the help of the club members, local farmers and farm labourers, ploughed, harrowed and leveled the golf course and duly planted the grass for the fairways and greens. Whilst digging a fossilized elephant’s tooth was found \which is still presently housed at the local museum.

Mr Young was engaged to build the first Club House – the design being based on a similar structure that Mrs McKenzie had seen in Ladysmith. Mr Neil McKenzie, the first President and Founder of the Club passed away in March 1938. The McKenzie Trophy Competition, in memory of him, still takes place at PSCC every year

The Mckenzie Cup takes place on the 12th and 13th of September this year  . . .

Saturday's Club Golf Fundraiser turned out to be a resounding success with 75 players in the field.  Monies raised on the day will be used and put towards new cutlery and table cloths that are so very much needed in our Catering and Conferencing section, so thanks to all of you who supported the golf, and also a big thank you to all the fabulous generosity shown by Members and Visitors towards the Raffle that was organised for the day.  Whew a whopping amount of R2380.00 was raised!!

We had 3 Raffle winners on Saturday - Phil Myburgh, Dave Milne & Rob Piers.  They received each a Bembridge Meat Hamper to the value of R200.

4 Couples from Durban (who are also Country Members at our club and have holiday homes in Hibberdene - therefore known as the "Hibberdene Killing
Machine") challenged our 4 Sheppie couples on the course yesterday.  The Hibberdene side were victorious THIS TIME ROUND.  This promises to become an annual event.
