World Wetlands Day - 2nd February
Volunteers manned the Green Skills stand at the City of Albany town square event
for World Wetlands Day on the 2nd February.
Sydney Golden Wattle just loves a nice wetland to invade. Green Skills showcased our Regional Weedy Wattle and Torndirrup National Park wattle projects and their achievements to date. With cut backs in funding for environmental weeds, it is becoming more important for the community to be able to identify these species and how to treat them for eradication and replace them with our lovely endemic species.

Modern Cloth Nappies
In our line of work, we meet with so many interesting, committed, passionate people.
Last week, we had one of those meetings – with Kristy Wiegele and Georgi Wardrop from St of John of God’s Mt Lawley Hospital (pictured). These midwives were already *full bottle* on modern cloth nappies; they were just missing the actual nappies to show their parents-to-be.
Not anymore! Thanks to a project funded by the Waste Authority, Green Skills has provided them with a Cloth Nappy Demo kit – specially for Antenatal Educators, full of modern nappies and the information parents need to use them.
They join the list of cloth nappy-friendly, participating hospitals:
  • Armadale Health Service
  • Joondalup Health Campus
  • King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women
  • The Family Birth Centre
  • St John of God Hospital, Murdoch
  • St John of God Hospital, Mt Lawley
  • St John of God Hospital, Subiaco
Interested in a free kit for your antenatal clinic? There are only 2 left! Midwives and Parent Educators can contact Aline in the Green Skills Murdoch office 9360 6667 or on email
This project is funded by the Waste Authority through the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Account.

Passata Galore
The Permaculture Albany group held a passata making workshop on the weekend in the Green Skills Albany Community Enterprise Development Centre. With a focus on food security, sustainability and making use of food in season, the group processed over four cases of home grown and market sourced tomatoes with everyone taking some jars home to enjoy at a later date.  The group discussed and tasted an array of dehydrated produce that can be added to the passata to make delicious soups and nearly instant but nutritious soups for busy lifestyles.
To book this venue for your next function contact the Albany office on 9842 1334 or email

Communities, Councils and Canteens
20 000 people will be engaged across the Great Southern in the next 12 months in a Green Skills project to reduce waste to landfill supported by grant funding from the State Government Waste Authority. Project activities will include zero waste workshops, a zucchini festival, recycling facility tours, a film night, support for local Boomerang Bag volunteers, support for regional councils to launch Terracycle programs and bringing together representatives from all Albany schools for a thinktank on canteen plastic and food waste.

Anne Sparrow, Green Skills Albany Manager, says: “We’re thrilled to get this funding because it will provide waste avoidance activities across five different councils to help schools and households reduce their landfill. This will relieve pressure on landfill sites and empower the community with strategies to manage their waste.”

Green Skills Albany has been a Terracycle collection point since 2017, accepting up to six difficult waste streams for recycling. For more information see their website or Facebook page
Just picked for our #foodisfree cart at Green Skills 38 Graham Street, Albany: eggplants, beans, cherry tomatoes, capsicum and basil. Some onions & shallots still, and coriander seed. • Australia Post mailing satchels,
  • Nescafe coffee pods,
  • Oral care products (toothpaste, toothbrush, floss),
  • Hair and skin care or cosmetic product containers.

All containers need to be empty, no need to clean them.

Drop off to Green Skills at 38 Graham Street, Albany during weekdays 9-3pm.
