Green Skills and Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee delivers Denmark Wetland’s workshop to community

On 9th February 2018, Green Skills Denmark delivered a “Focus on Riparian Health” community field event in Denmark, in collaboration with Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee.

The workshop took participants to a number of riparian and wetland sites in Denmark, looking at revegetation success on wetlands and riparian systems to manage nutrient discharge from waterways into the Wilson Inlet.

Participants started the day with an experience of the peaceful and birdlife-rich paperbark wetland at the Denmark Wetland Centre in Atkinson Road.  The group then moved to the town for a discussion and field investigation of long-term effort for creekline management and rehabilitation at Millars Creek and its associated constructed wetlands.

The workshop wrapped up with a delicious finger-food lunch, eaten under cover at the Norm Thornton Park gazebo.

Community feedback was very positive and sincerely appreciative, with a resounding request for continued community events of this nature.

Ecojobs staff Jan van der Walt and Steven Spragg have been working hard to bring the bully bullrush (Typha orientalis) down!

Wetlands need careful management where this invasive and aggressive species of Typha grows. Typha infestations interfere with water flow (restricting access to water by wildlife), shorten bore drains, reduce water quality, and provide breeding grounds for vermin and mosquitoes.

Wax Wraps for Waste Wise Wednesdays

Waste Wise Wednesdays are popping up all over WA Primary Schools. Even school canteens are getting onboard with waste free lunches!

Our schoolkids know that single use, throwaway plastic – juice boxes, cling wrap, ziplock bags, yoghurt tubs – is out!Reusable drink bottles, reusable food containers (hello, beeswax wraps!), and composting your food scraps is in!

The Plastic Bag Ban is no Prob for this Team!

From 1 July 2018, lightweight single-use plastic bags will be banned statewide in Western Australia.

Boomerang Bags are popping up in local shopping centres, plastic straws are falling fast out of favour (heard of The Last Straw campaign?), disposable coffee cups are attracting a surcharge (who could forget ABC’s War on Waste tram full of coffee cups!) and of course beeswax wraps instead of plastic cling wrap!

The City of Joondalup’s Staff Development Day (pictured), featured workshops preparing for the Plastic Bag Ban. Our DIY Beeswax Wrap workshop combined with Boomerang Bags and all things worm farm and compost, means this group has made a great start!

Newbies and greenies mixed freely – grating wax, ironing and getting to know each other. For this large organisation, it was an epic 2 day team building event!

Want to know more about our DIY Beeswax Wrap workshops? Contact the Green Skills Perth office – abrion@greenskills.org.au or 9360 6667.
