Green Skills farewells Annabelle Newbury

Perth manager Annabelle Newbury has retired. It’s big news for the Green Skills community, especially the Perth office which she managed for 21 years.

In her farewell to Green Skills,  Annabelle said, It’s been a delight to work in such an exceptional organisation which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary.  The impetus behind Green Skills formation in 1989 was to deal with the urgent issue of climate change. This is now more crucial than ever of course and makes the work we do matter a great deal.

“I have worked with so many wonderfully committed staff over the years, and particularly during my time as State Manager between 2007-2013, I got to know staff in all our offices very well.

“I wish you all the very best for the future and hope that each of you find joy and meaning in your work everyday and forge strong connections with the people who come into your lives.”

What a beautiful note to leave on, Annabelle. Thank you, it’s been an absolute pleasure and we also wish you much joy and connection in your next ventures. We will miss you!

Green Skills Ecojobs Perth team planting seedlings at Yellagonga Regional Park

Record planting day for Yellagonga Regional Park

Reserve maintenance is always busy in winter with planting jobs. But the one at Beenyup Swamp (Yellagonga Regional Park) saw a whopping 11,000 seedlings planted!
“It’s our biggest 1-day job to date, and we were all done by 1pm!” said Green Skills Ecojobs Supervisor Ben Atkinson.
With Beenyup Swamp being the main source of nutrients entering Lake Joondalup, the newly planted sedges will strip nutrients and improve overall water quality.
This planting event is part of a 2 year DBCA (Dept of Biodiveristy Conservation and Attractions) project to rehabilitate the wetlands of Yellagonga -  Lake Joondalup, Lake Goollelal, Beenyup Swamps and Walluburnup Swamp.
With Spring daylight hours and temperatures now warming up, these seedlings will be taking off!

Planning for on-farm Biodiversity Conservation in Gondwana Link

Snap-shot Bushland Survey and Eco-Assessment on Currawong farm, Monjebup

On Monday 9th Green Skills conducted its fourth  ‘Rapid Snapshot Bushland Assessment and Eco Planning’  survey on Currawong farm, near Boxwood HIll.
Done in conjunction with the Stefani family, the aim was to  do a snap shot biodiversity assessment to assist with planning for bushland conservation and revegetation planning for this 990 hectare farm that is strategically located next to Bush Heritage’s North Monjebup reserve as well as the Corackerup Nature Reserve. This farm, which has about 269 ha of remnant bushland  is thus situated in the heart of the FItzgerald to Stirling section of Gondwana LInk

The survey team comprised Melissa Howe ( Ecologist), Basil Schur ( Green Skills) , Angela Sanders ( Bush Heritage), and Jane THompson ( co owner of Yarraweyah Farm). Also in attendance was Freya Spencer (Gillamii and North Sirling Pallingup NRM officer), Leoni McMahon ( FGB Executive Officer) and Reaghan Shalders ( FGB NRM Officer).

Green Skills Albany was proud to support PermacultureWest to bring David Holmgren to speak at Albany’s first Permaculture Festival on 17th August as part of the RetroSuburbia Roadshow, celebrating 40 years of permaculture in WA. Lots of fun was had at our first Refashion Session at Green Skills Albany in August, where we snipped up clothes and linen and remade them into tailor-designed, unique garments. This workshop was held with support from the Waste Authority of WA.
Julie has generously offered to continue this event monthly in Albany. We have lots of clothing and fabric and basic sewing supplies, so no need to bring anything unless you have favourite tools that you want to use. All levels of experience are welcome; there will be people you can ask for help.
Come along for a gold coin donation to the next one happening at
6-8pm at 38 Graham Street (new meeting room at the back of the building) on Monday 30th September.
Sew Cool!
