South Coast Birds and Biodiversity Festival Focus
A native bandicoot (also known as Quenda) is released back into the Balijup Fauna Sanctuary during a recent citizen science workshop where participants assisted with monitoring the success of the Bandicoot population within the predator-proof fenced sanctuary - one of the 2020 South Coast Festival of Birds and Biodiversity program highlights.

The 2020 South Coast Festival of Birds and Biodiversity takes flight

The Green Skills and BirdLife Australia 8th annual South Coast Festival of Birds and Biodiversity is now underway. Festival activities are currently happening and the program will run until April 2020. There will be an array of inspiring events showcasing the unique and beautiful bird fauna of the South Coast of Western Australia, held in and around Denmark and Albany.
“With many interesting events, there is something to suit all ages and tastes” says festival organiser, Basil Schur.
“People can learn more about our special birds and the unique biodiversity of the south coast and their conservation at a variety of talks and tours, participate in workshops to learn more about our wonderful local wildlife, fly kites at the Albany foreshore, or enjoy exhibitions of spectacular art and photography.”

Key support for the Festival is coming from Lotterywest, UWA-Albany, City of Albany, Great Southern Development Commission,  Birdlife Western Australia, Denmark Birds Group, Gondwana Link, Green Skills, the Museum of the Great Southern, Albany Bird Group, Friends of the Western Ground Parrot, BirdLife Western Australia, Gillamii Centre, Bush Heritage Australia, Department of BCA, other groups and many volunteers & supporters.

Shorebird Bird ID Workshops hosted by BirdLife’s Dr Vicki Stokes will provide information on our amazing shorebirds, how to identify them and how to contribute to annual surveys. Two sessions are scheduled at Denmark CRC on Thursday 27th February from 2pm to 5pm and at Albany Green Skills on Tuesday 3rd March from 9am to 11.30am.
The Great Cocky Count is the biggest single survey for black cockatoos in Western Australia, continues this year with information workshops in Nornalup on Saturday 29th February and Denmark on 1st March. The Great Cocky Count will take place on Sunday 5th April.
The Festival of Birds Symposium is the Festival’s main event, held on Friday 13th March at UWA Albany and features high powered speakers including UWA’s Professor Steve Hopper, Dr Judy Fisher, Professor Dale Roberts, Dr Vicki Stokes and others. This main event will be held at UWA Albany (35 Stirling Terrace), 8.30 to 12.45pm, Friday 13th March. 
Join us for a weekend Gondwana Link Bird and Eco Restoration Field Trip from Friday 13th March to Sunday 15th March. Visit eco restoration sites near Boxwood Hill, the Yongergnow Malleefowl Centre in Ongerup and more.
Great progress at the Green Skills Denmark Community Garden Workshop with a recent garden tour, compost workshop and much produce harvested. AND we have a new shade house, with a hot house coming this week.  Come and visit the garden behind the Denmark CRC, and become a gardening volunteer.  For more information contact Basil Schur
The Refashion Sessions are still happening at Green Skills Albany - come along and join us snipping, sewing, chatting, mending, altering, patching and switching, and leave with a couple of new-to-you garments! Or help us make a set of fabric bunting that will be made available to loan to community groups for events.
All clothing, thread, wool, sewing machines and basic mending tools supplied, with experienced volunteers to support you. Bring your own tools if you prefer. We have an abundance of fabric & clothing already, no more needed at this time!

The Green Skills Food is Free cart is available to the community whenever the gates are open, which is roughly 9-3pm weekdays (may be earlier or later depending on staffing). Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for current offerings. While you’re there, you may want to bring your coffee pods, toothbrushes or old pens for recycling in the TerraCycle program. You might even like to set up a Food is Free space or edible verge garden at your place.
