Dr Chris Erven - Winner of PechaKucha competition

The competition was part of Vitae reSEARCH Careers 2014. Chris presented a talk on Quantum Cryptography and had just 6 minutes 40 seconds to impress the panel before the next presenter took to the stage!

ICT Research Pioneers Award 2014 - Transforming Societies

Jacques Carolan, a third year PhD student has made the finals for the ICT Research Pioneers Award 2014 under the category Transforming Societies. For more information about Jacques please see our "About Me" section.

Visiting Fellow joins CQP from Kyoto University

Dr Kyoko Kitamura, Assistant Professor at The Hakubi Center for Advanced Research at Kyoto University will be working with us as a Visiting Fellow. Her main research interests are Quantum Optoelectronics. We are very lucky to have her with us and we hope she enjoys her time with CQP.

Research Assistant/Associate: We are currently recruiting an experimentalist with a strong background in quantum optics and experience of implementing homodyne detection and working with continuous variable quantum optics.
For more details about this position please go to the careers page on our website.

We currently have PhD opportunities in experimental and theoretical quantum optics. These 4 year studentships are available as part of a U.S. Army Research Office Grant  for quantum characterisation, verification, and validation (QCVV). For more details please visit our Opportunities page or to register your interest please submit your CV and a Covering letter to: with the subject line 'ARO studentship application'

About Me

Jacques Carolan:

I am a 3rd year PhD student at the CQP.  My interests are in the fundamentals of quantum physics with experimental demonstrations, and recently my research has focused on verification techniques for large scale linear optical quantum computers.

Last year, I was a UK finalist in the international science communication competition Fame Lab. I also work at festivals, explaining physics to unsuspecting festival goers and I have recently developed the worlds first ever quantum game show: ‘quantum quizzicks’. My passion for science communication stems from a childish enthusiasm for science.  Rather than telling people facts, it is this inquisitive nature I want to bring out in others.

Outside of science I force large groups of people to listen to my amplified voice by regularly performing standup comedy across the South West.
