Verifying the future of quantum computing

A paper in this months Nature Photonics co-authored by CQP researchers Jacques Carolan, Jasmin Meinecke, Nicholas Russell, Dr Jonathan Matthews and Dr Anthony Laing  show how we are one step closer to proving the reliability of a quantum computer.

CQP Researchers co-author Nature Comms Article

A paper co-authored by several researchers including Dr Xiao-Qi Zhou and Professor Jeremy O'Brien from the Centre for Quantum Photonics has been published in Nature Communications this month.

QECDT receives extra funding for equipment

Congratulations to the Quantum Engineering Centre for Doctoral Training who have secured £393,700 of equipment funding. The QECDT will welcome its first cohort of students in September this year. There are currently limited opportunities for experimentally focussed students to join the programme. See our opportunities page for more details.

New members of CQP

We have had several new starters at CQP this month including Laurent Kling and Galiya Benson! We also have a visiting academic, Austin Lund from University of Queensland over the summer  - Welcome Everyone!

We are looking to recruit an exceptional individual to become our Centre Manager for the Quantum Engineering Centre for Doctoral Training. The successful candidate will take sole responsibility for the administrative running of the Centre including strategic and operational planning; managing Centre finances; administering student records and processes (from recruitment to graduation); event management; pursuit of funding and long-term engagement with academic partners; public engagement and impact activities. If you think you have what it takes or for more details about the post please go to the website.

About Me

Chris Erven:

Chris is a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the Centre for Quantum Photonics. He completed his PhD in Physics with a specialization in Quantum Information at the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo with his thesis “On Experimental Quantum Communication and Cryptography”. Having built a bulk optical free-space QKD system from scratch during his PhD he realized he was missing a key component to make it useful, namely integration. This led him to join the CQP and their world leading work in integrated quantum photonics. He is involved in a variety of research projects including quantum metrology/spectroscopy, high-speed QKD on an integrated platform, the Quantum-in-the-Cloud project, tomography of stabilizer states, and the newly formed Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Engineering. He also enjoys engaging with a wider audience and co-founded CQP’s Outreach team which has already successfully participated in Skirting Science 2014, an event aimed at encouraging year 9 girls to pursue studies in the Sciences.
In his free time Chris is an avid golfer and badminton player. He plays for a number of teams in the first division of the Bristol badminton league, is a member of the Avon County second team (which won the division last year!), and is an assistant coach for the Avon County Development Squad. He’s also been known to brew the occasional batch of delicious home-brew every so often.
