What an incredible month it's been!

Firstly, we'd like to acknowledge World Down Syndrome Day, 21 March 2021.

On this day, people all around the world celebrate the lives and achievements of people with Down syndrome, creating a global voice, advocating for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome.

This year many of us marked the occasion together at our Family Fun Day at Werribee Zoo.

Thank you to those of you who joined us at the event or participated in the day's celebrations in another way. Raising collective awareness and knowledge is vital to ensure the inclusion of people with Down syndrome worldwide.

In this month's edition of DNews, you'll enjoy highlights from World Down Syndrome Day, see what's coming up at DSV, learn about our 2021-2023 Strategic Plan and get the results of our recent NDIS Quality and Safeguards audit.

Please contact us on 9486 9600 or email info@dsav.asn.au with questions, information, concerns or any other enquiry - no matter how big or small.

Until next time...
From the team at DSV.

Family Fun Day / World Down Syndrome Day

Last Sunday 21 March our community gathered at Werribee Zoo to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day at our annual Family Fun Day event and the day was a huge success. We will be sharing some snapshots over the next week on our social media accounts, please follow along on Instagram and Facebook.

A special shout out to our wonderful Events Coordinator, Shelley McCarthy, who is pursuing a career in Social Work after studying hard for the past few years. Shelley has been with DSV since 2013, with a little sojourn in between, and will be greatly missed. Congratulations on your new social work role Shelley! And what a way to go out with a bang - by coordinating our first ever Family Fun Day at Werribee Zoo!

If you were interested in providing feedback about the day, given it was our first Family Fun Day at a brand new venue, we ran a little poll which you can find on our FFD 2021 highlights reel here, or please feel free to email info@dsav.asn.au

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the day. We look forward to sharing Family Fun Day with even more of our community in 2022.
Lots of Socks 2021

It was fantastic to see you wearing your Great Barrier Reef themed socks, designed by Artists Peter Rowe and Kendall Perkins

We’re looking forward to continuing to work alongside people with Down syndrome and their families to help them reach their potential and live the life they choose, and have set some goals and strategies to provide support for families and carers and take a lead role in shifting community attitudes.

Thank you to our metropolitan and regional members, community and strategic partners, DSV team and board for their extensive contribution in shaping our 2021-23 strategic plan.

NDIS Quality and Safeguards audit

We recently received the results from the NDIS Quality and Safeguards audit. As expected, DSV was approved for complying with all relevant NDIS Quality and Safeguards standards - providing safe, enjoyable, innovative and compliant programs for our community.

Thank you to those of you who were interviewed by the auditor as part of this independent process and congratulations and thank you to the DSV team and board.

COVID-19 vaccination rollout

Earlier this month the Australian Government Department of Health confirmed that adults with Down syndrome are included in Phase 1B of the vaccination rollout, regardless of whether they have any other health conditions or not.

It is an important acknowledgement that people with Down syndrome are at an increased risk from COVID-19, and that the government has listened to our concerns.
