What’s New on Our Website’ is a new, regular email to inform you of the latest news and events that have been posted on our website.

 

Our House: a short film in which young people talk about living in residential children’s homes

‘Our House’ is the third in a trilogy of films made by a group of researchers, film and sound artists, social care professionals and young people in care in Cambridgeshire. The young people put forward the issue of residential care as an important area they wanted to address through film. So in August 2014 we (see below for member of the team) gathered for our third animation summer school to bring their ideas to life through animation and sound. The result is ‘Our House’ to be screened to an invited audience on October 28th.

Public give resounding “Yes” to commercial research in the NHS

 

A new survey conducted on behalf of the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN) shows that 94% of people say it is important for them that the NHS is a place where the life-sciences industry can carry out clinical research. The survey also revealed that 92% of people say it is important to them to be offered new treatments by their healthcare professional. The results are announced as a national industry event hosted by the Network takes place in London.

Nine out of ten people would take part in clinical research 


A new survey conducted on behalf of the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN) shows that 89% of people would be willing to take part in clinical research if they were diagnosed with a medical condition or disease – with an all-time-low figure of just 3% saying they would not consider it at all. The survey also revealed that 95% of people said it was important to them that the NHS carries out clinical research. Last year over 600,000 people took part in research which aims to improve diagnosis, treatment and care of patients in the NHS. The growing importance of clinical research to the general public and their increased willingness to take part suggests that this number is set to rise.

Events

What can Big Data do for HSR?

The HSRN Winter meeting will be held on 2 December on the topic of how big data meets HSR approaches. The afternoon will look at what we mean by big data and provide inspiring examples from other disciplines including social and medical sciences. How big data can be applied to Health Service Research will be examined by a range of speakers including Adam Steventon, Head of Data Analytics at the Health Foundation.

The event will be chaired by Jeremy Wyatt, Leadership chair in eHealth research, University of Leeds. Delegates will be encouraged to discuss future directions for HSR and what the opportunities are for its applications.

Public Engagement training events at the University of Cambridge

As part of the University of Cambridge’s Research Development Programme, there is a Public Engagement Training event being held in November. 

Your research message: Your research message explores how research ideas can be translated and discussed in the public domain, using storytelling as one tool for organising a structured research narrative.

Additional Public Engagement training events at the University of Cambridge

As part of the University of Cambridge’s Research Development Programme, there is a Public Engagement Training event being held in December.

Your research video is a one day course which teaches researchers the skills required to make a short film. The course shows how very low-budget short films can create excitement and generate discussion about research.
