TEAM BUILDING: It’s no secret that high-performing teams don’t happen by accident. But how do you build such a team?

Have you ever been part of a fun, high performing team? You show up to work, you are energized by the comradery, and you know they’ve got your back. You function together like a well-oiled machine.

It’s a great feeling, isn’t it?

Building your team wisely is the most important thing you can do to increase your chances of success, but it can also be one of the hardest.

If you are on a team or building a team, here are five pieces of practical advice.

  1. Choose wisely. Assemble those with complementary skills and a shared vision. Put them in the right role. 
  1. Invest in retaining top performers. Assess their strengths and develop their leadership skills. Offer financial rewards. Give them time to pursue what’s important to them outside the office. 
  1. Tackle complex issues together. Empower them. Listen and respond to feedback. Don’t micromanage but be there when they get stuck. 
  1. Have fun and dream together. Get away from the office and dream big. Include them in decision making. 
  1. Expect excellence. Have high standards and make them known. Model consistency and be trustworthy. 
Your team is the backbone of your success. Take the time to build a great team.
