Outdoor Recreation in Oregon

Outdoor recreation is major economic driver and a huge reason why people move, travel and work in the West.

New to state government is a formal Office of Outdoor Recreation elevating the importance of outdoor recreation in Oregon.  Travel Oregon also started an Outdoor Recreation Initiative intended to improve access and increase economic impact and sustainability of Oregon's recreation economy.

Quoting, industry and association testimony in support of the new Office for Outdoor Recreation:

"High-quality outdoor recreation opportunities on public lands contribute significantly to the quality of life for Oregonians and they help attract new businesses and residents to Oregon. It’s no surprise that Bend, Hood River and other communities near our National Forests are growing quickly. Business owners who enjoy hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, kayaking, climbing, skiing and other activities are moving to Oregon because they can enjoy bountiful recreation opportunities at the end of the work day. They use Oregon’s recreation assets as a tool to recruit high- quality employees. This adds up to a significant economic driver in communities that are gateways to our federal and state lands.

We know that a sustainable outdoor recreation future for Oregon will need to have a solid trail infrastructure connecting people to our public lands. Without state and federal-level support for the maintenance and development of many signature trail systems throughout the state we will continue to see increased pressure on public lands. An Office of Outdoor Recreation should work quickly to develop a plan to tackle our lagging trail infrastructure and coordinate this effort across jurisdictions and sectors.”

"In Oregon, the outdoor industry generates $12.8 billion in consumer spending, $955 million in state and local tax revenue and directly supports 141,000 jobs. We believe that establishing a state-level office is a small investment with the potential for an unlimited return.  Across the country, we have seen these offices strengthen the industry and capitalize on the significant benefits that outdoor recreation provides to local economies and communities. Creating this office marks an intentional effort on your part to grow the industry and forge new opportunities for economic development and job creation. With the addition of an advisory council, Oregon has an opportunity to put forth policies that will establish new cross-sector partnerships and generate growth within the industry. Establishing clear policy priorities within Oregon Parks and Rec will drive the expansion of the recreation industry in a way that can’t currently be achieved.”
